I didn't get a pic, as mentioned upthread. But when I replanted them it was completely obvious that they were round flat cactus with conical taproots. So tentatively, I'm confirming the ID. Guy said that's what they were, and it sure is what they look like at this point.

Cactus lovers take heart, there's better soil coming!
I smacked my face with my palm when I realized there are huge limestone cliffs here. Limestone soil I have in abundance. So I went and stole some from a city park, I'll screen it out and make new soil. Current transplants will be left alone, of course. But any seedlings getting potted from now on will get the soil they crave.
Many many thanks!

Please read page 2. Better soil for seedlings. And then read page 3, better soil for the future.
The limestone soil was so alkaline that washing it tore up my hands.

Hey what do you guys think about the bagged soil for established cactus? Like regular houseplant cactus. I understand why you make your own but is there any reason not to use this?

Hey Doc
You could use the cacti mix but I would run it through a screen or sieve so you only end up with the sand and small organic parts of the mix. What you dont want is large pieces of organic matter in you mix for seedlings. I have been using a general purpose seed raising mix that has been run through a piece of fly screen which gives me a nice fine mix that has a good ratio of sand to organic matter.
It good to see you enjoying playing with cacti and if you are as successful at raising cacti as you have been with mushrooms you are going to need a new house just for you cacti.
Cheers Got

Random cactus question- are there big cactus that are freeze resistant? We have cactus species that live here but they tend to be small and globular, or little pads. The weather is mostly nice but we do get several hard freezes each year.
I'd like something big enough to plant under a window to discourage burglars.
Also unrelated- I went back to the hardware store, and the other big San Pedro were there, so I bought them. Prior thread was deleted because I was acting like a dumb n00b, but this was a big chain hardware store. So now I have four big ones, plus a little one I got as a gift from a generous member:

While I was shopping, a few loose cactus pups found their way into my big potted cactus and have been re-homed:

How cold does it get? T. terscheckii can stand temperatures down to 10-12 F without damage. I can't think of many cacti that can stand temperatures much lower than that which grow upwards.

Once or twice a year it drops to 0F or a bit colder, though generally 15-30F is the low temp. Pure coincidence, I bought a little terscheckii yesterday! Ferocious spines on it, I hope maybe that might survive. Doesn't have to get face high, even ankle height cactus are a serious deterrent to casual thieves.

Fukkin' w00T! Thanks for the advice guys, you are super stars! This was one of the ones I mentioned upthread that was by a window and hadn't sprouted. I put it onto coir/perlite/limestone, moved it into the greenhouse, and BAM!
So this is 3 out of 4 seeds so far, and 3 out of my 6 total. Not bad at all.

There's a big cholla at my neighbor's house they told me to clear some branches off it. I can send you a bunch. It's fucking gnarly!! It survived this winter beautifully and we had some sub zero lows and single digit highs this year.

Cholla! OMG, I didn't even think of that! They actually grow just south of here, I should be able to go get some for myself. But if you are picking/packing for other people anyway, I'd be happy to pay shipping for a box of bulbs.
I don't know what I'd have to get paid for cholla removal, I've had some bad encounters with those things. Freakin' perfect, dude. Thanks!

Awesome. PM me when you do. Jumpers or not, cholla are fierce. I got one stuck in my toe one time, and had to walk back with it there because I couldn't find a stick, just more cholla.

So to my neighbor's amusement I got some cuttings and holes in my hands...crazy old man jus sat there and laughed haha. Figure that's 90% of why he let me get them. He said not to worry about trimming it back as "that's why I don't mess with that son of a bitch!". I don't mind being the but end of an old man's joke for some gorgeous nasty cholla
