Partially. If weŕe using computer metaphors, I think that stating that ´culture is your software´ would be more accurate. Your operating system would be your apriori self. You cannot change this. The software you run (in this case culture) is limited by preconceived notions that cannot be changed (operating system). You can upgrade your software (change believes) but only to the extent that your operating system will allow (apriori self). Though I agree with Mckenna, I think the extent of the changes we can make are very limited.
Or maybe I´m looking at this too much from a kantian perspective. (damn epistemology) lol

As a die hard linux user of 15 years I disagree. I think the operating system analogy works beautifully.

I think is talking out his ass, getting too caught up in his thoughts, and encouraging psychedelic drug use that ultimatly harms the group it sets out to heal.
Nothing was said that couldnt be understood by an open mind in a sociology class.

when "it" is culture, it is a "them". anyway, what good does it do to be against a thing? you can take actions to change it, but it doesn't do much to just sit there and talk badly about it. if i have trash on my floor, i pick it up and put it in the trash can. or the recycle bin.

This thread has motivated me to listen to my collection of his lectures again, Keeping with the computer theme I'd like to discus a clip I wrote down
"The last time I was here I had said that the difference between a psycadelic and a computer was that one of them was too small to swallow. Well I'm happy to say that a lot of progress had been made in the last 8 months."
what is everyones opinion on his idea that 1 a visible language can be created inside a virtual world 2 a psychdelic experience can be created inside a virtual world

I like No.1 and agree that language can be created inside a virtual world. Language is just an inert symbol untill it is given meaning in the mind and thats based on all past experiences so when we are talking we cant know for sure that the other person completely knows what we are really saying. Thats why the larger your vocabulary the more ideas you can transmit to others. Terence Mckenna is so amazing to listen to because of his beautifuly poetic use of words.
So when language becomes externalized and objectified we can be not 100%, but more clear with what we mean to 'say'.

Fair chance that many (most?) of us knew what this thread was about just by reading the title. Whether or not 'culture is your operating system' or 'its your software,' I think the sentiment of the video is spot on.
Cultures imprint an arbitrary reality-tunnel on you that consists of assumptions, biases, and prejudices that are fined tuned for the benefit of the culture--not for your benefit. Take a trip to a drastically different country, say India or Gabon, to see how their culture operating system/software differs from yours. Of course, it's easy to see how naive, foolish, and conditioned another person's reality-tunnel is. But it's much harder, impossible for some people, to realize the asinine and arbitrary nature of their own reality-tunnel that has been imprinted by culture for culture's own sake.

I usually go on binges when I listen to lectures. The McKenna binge is the most powerful and popular one, but lately I've been on a RAW kick.
In response to 1: Language is a system of representation and abstraction. As such, it stands to reason that we could have a visible language as well.
In response to 2: I think you can approximate the psychedelic experience but I don't think you could ever recreate it in the virtual world. If you consider the psychedelic experience to be nothing more than fireworks and visuals--which I'm not assuming you do--then you could probably recreate it. but the psychedelic comes with bodily feelings, intuitions, insights, epiphanies, good feelings, in short, the psychedelic experience definitely has an intimate connection to the body which could not be portrayed in a virtual world.
