Verpa conica and maybe Lentinellus sp?
    #14382563 - 05/01/11 01:01 PM (12 years, 9 months ago)

Closest I could get with this species is Verpa conica.

Habitat: Found growing in hardwood forest, about 1,000' ASL. Growing off woody debri on forest floor, King county WA.

Gills: Not really any gills, but I would imagine that the entire underside of the cap is where spores form.

Stem: anywhere from 2" to 4" long, maybe 1/4" in diameter, hollow with wispy white mycelium covering the surface.

Bruising: none noted.

Other information: Smells like a Verpa bohemica. There were some cool little black eggs on the underside of the cap.

I think this is either a species of Lentinellus, or maybe Phyllotopsis. I'm just not convinced that it a species of Pleurotus. What are your thoughts?

Habitat: Found growing off of a LIVE maple tree, hardwood forest in King county WA, about 800'ASL

Cap: Resembles a Pleurotus sp. Small scales on top that are a light brown/orange color. Fuzzy to the touch. About 1 3/4" in diam.

Gills: Picture describe them better than I can:shrug:

Stem: Not really any stem. Attached at the top of cap to the tree, unlike Pleurotus where there is actually a stem. Pretty solid when picked (didn't want to come off)

Bruising: none noted.

Other information: Smells good, nice and woody. Very soft and fuzzy on the top of cap. Only one single mushroom found on the tree, no clusters.

Have a great day everyone:cheers:

I'd call #1 Verpa conica.

Thanks Joie. Crepidotus for #2 was another one I was considering, and now looking closer, it is a better fit than the others. :super:

I'm debating on trying a small piece of the Verpa, just to see what it tastes like:shrug: Curious as to how similar the taste is to Verpa bohemica.
