Acohol Linked to 5% of Australian Cancer Cases
    #14383409 - 05/01/11 06:03 PM (10 years, 12 days ago)

Australians should give up drinking alcohol entirely to reduce their risk of getting cancer, the Cancer Council recommended yesterday, in a warning it likened to the dawn of the anti-smoking movement.

Its revised position statement on alcohol, to be published in the Medical Journal of Australia today, says alcohol is responsible for an estimated 5070 cancer cases in Australia a year, more than half of them breast cancer.

It reveals the number of cancer cases caused by long-term drinking in Australia to be far higher than previously thought, following strong international evidence of its link to a broader range of cancer types.

The study attributes alcohol consumption to one in 20 of all cancer cases.

In the report, which puts alcohol among the most carcinogenic products in common use, the council warns that any level of alcohol use increases the risk of cancer.

It showed that drinking alcohol causes more than 2600 cases of breast cancer each year.

Long-term consumption also causes almost 1300 cancers of the mouth, pharynx and larynx (41per cent of overall cases) and almost 600 cancers of the oesophagus (51per cent). It is also responsible for 500 bowel cancers in men (7per cent), and is probably the cause of 400 bowel cancers in women (7per cent).

Cancer Council chief executive and study co-author Ian Olver said there was a small risk associated with a couple of drinks a day but people should know that abstaining altogether further reduced risk.

"I'm not expecting people to reduce their alcohol use to zero but we are getting the information out there so people can factor it into the lifestyle choices that they make," he said.

McCusker Foundation for Action on Alcohol and Youth director Mike Daube said that the study findings made the case for health warnings on alcohol products "unstoppable".

Winemakers Federation of Australia chief executive Stephen Strachan said there were any number of reports coming out pointing to negative and positive impacts of alcohol and "I just don't think you can interpret from any one report any significant conclusion".
Australian Hotels Association WA chief executive Bradley Woods said no one would take notice of the message that no one should drink at all.

I love how when they link alcohol to 5% of cancer cases all they do is issue a warning

But then ONE person dies from 2ce and they suggest prohibition...

"The study attributes alcohol consumption to one in 20 of all cancer cases."

I only ever got 60s in math, but isn't that only 5%?

about 80 percent of non-randomized studies later to turn out to be wrong. so it's not surprising they have gone back and forth on the topic.

and even if it is a good finding, it's still not something to worry about

Quote:

If a study somehow avoids every one of these problems and finds a real connection to long-term changes in health, you’re still not guaranteed to benefit, because studies report average results that typically represent a vast range of individual outcomes. Should you be among the lucky minority that stands to benefit, don’t expect a noticeable improvement in your health, because studies usually detect only modest effects that merely tend to whittle your chances of succumbing to a particular disease from small to somewhat smaller. “The odds that anything useful will survive from any of these studies are poor,” says Ioannidis

so i would like to see it studied on a biochemical level before i take anything from it.
