If it was the first then it'd be written 6÷(2(1x2)).

I agree that it the proper way to write it out, but I thought I would clarify.

Why not just use the distributive property in step one to take care of the parenthesis DeCypher?

2(1+2) is a pretty clear algebraic term, nothing tricky just distribute.

which would give us 2*1+2*2=6

6/6=1

x=1

6÷2(1+2)=1
6÷(2(1+2))=1
(6÷2)(1+2)=9
6/2 (1+2)=9

I'm a complete ruhtard and I know that x=9, there.

I didn't read any of the replies, though. Perhaps I am wrong but just don't know it because I'm so obtuse and thick headed.

If you want to use the distributive property then why would you ignore the 6?  We have 6÷2(1+2), and distributing the 6÷2 gets us (6÷2)1 + (6÷2)2 = (3)1 + (3)2 = 9.  Multiplication and division have the same priority, so when we have an expression composed of multiple things being multiplied and divided we have to start from the left and move to the right.

Huh?

6÷2(1+2) is identical to 6/2(1+2); both of these expressions equal 9.

It's all about how it's parsed.  A TI-X calc will give 9 (i'm almost positive).  This is because an equation with only division and multiplication is parsed from left to right, and / is the operator used for division.  Division is really just multiplication by a fraction. PEMDAS order of ops will give you 1.  I'm a stats class away from a BA in math (have been for a year). The answer is 1. But, the form does seem sort of ambiguous.

I can't tell if the author means (6/2)(1+2) or 6/(2*(1+2))

Order of operations tells you that multiplication has the same priority of division, so when both are present one proceeds from left to right.  PEMDAS is thus technically wrong if one takes it literally; it should be PE(M,D)(A,S) where the order of multiplication & division and addition & subtraction can be reversed depending on which is leftmost in the equation.

For example:

1x3x9÷9 = ((1x3)x9)÷9
1÷3x9÷3 = ((1÷3)x9)÷3

6÷2(1+2) in English is six divided by the product of 2, and the sum of 1 and 2

6/2(1+2) in English is the product of, the quotient of 6 and 2, and the sum of 1 and 2

Eh, I agree that spelled out in words you are correct but ÷ and / are synonymous symbols AFAIK.

In any case one should use as many parenthesis as necessary to avoid these problems. lol

yes / and ÷ are equivalent operations

HOWEVER

6÷2(1+2) is not identical to 6/2(1+2)

because 6÷2(1+2) states that (1+2) is clearly being multiplied by the 2

6/2(1+2)implies that its 6/2 times (1+2)/1 since there are no parenthesis indicating that (1+2) is on the denominator

you see when you write out rational expression (fractions) on one horizontal line using a slash / instead of a horizontal bar you MUST include parenthesis.

I don't think so... if they're equivalent operations then substituting one symbol for the other shouldn't change the meaning of the expression.  In both cases it's unclear whether or not we're supposed to take 6/2 first, and THEN multiply by the parentheses, or multiply 2 by the parentheses and then take 6 divided by all that.  Technically speaking though, in the absence of clarification we would proceed from left to right in both expressions and divide 6 by 2 first, then multiply by the 3.

If that's true then the same rule would have to apply to fractions that use the ÷ symbol.

Sometimes when i'm programming I find myself using parenthesis when not even necessary to make sure what I want is clear.
