What is the answer to...
6÷2(1+2)=x
Some people say x=9 Some people say x=1
what says the pub, if they care to do math on a sunday???

According to the order of operations we have to take the sum of 1 and 2 first resulting in 3 then we take the product of 2 and 3 resulting in 6 then we take the quotient of 6 and 6 resulting in one x=1

another way we can do this is distribute the 2 into the sum of 1 and 2 resulting in the sum of 2 and 4 which is 6 then we take the quotient of 6 and 6 again resulting in 1

An alternative way to do this is to take 6 and divide it by 2(1+2) resulting in the rational expression 6/[2(1+2)] which is the same as 6/2 times 1/(1+2) and we all know that 6/2 is 3 so its really 3 times 1/(1+2) which is 3/(1+2) or just 1

Yeah i thought this was a pretty straightforward question as well. A lot of people seem to get the answer as 9.
here is a response from facebook as to how to solve this equation. (prepare for stupidity)
Christopher Johnson: You don't really even have to add the numbers in parentheses first. Another fun way to do this math problem is using distribution: first you do the division: 6÷2 = 3. Then you distribute multiplication by 3 to each of the terms inside the parentheses: 3(1+2) = 3(1) + 3(2) = 3 + 6 = 9.

Yeah order of operations is a common deficiency in many people.

According to the order of operations we have to take the sum of 1 and 2 first resulting in 3 then we take the product of 2 and 3 resulting in 6 then we take the quotient of 6 and 6 resulting in one x=1

I agree you would take the sum of 1 and 2 first because they're within parentheses, but after that multiplication and division are of the same rank so I would proceed from left to right:
6÷2(3) = 6÷2x3 = 3x3 = 9
Interestingly enough, some calculators appear to put implicit multiplication at a higher rank than explicit multiplication:
Quote:
Implied multiplication has a higher priority than explicit multiplication to allow users to enter expressions, in the same manner as they would be written. For example, the TI-80, TI-81, TI-82, and TI-85 evaluate 1/2X as 1/(2*X), while other products may evaluate the same expression as 1/2*X from left to right. Without this feature, it would be necessary to group 2X in parentheses, something that is typically not done when writing the expression on paper.
This order of precedence was changed for the TI-83 family, TI-84 Plus family, TI-89 family, TI-92 Plus, Voyage™ 200 and the TI-Nspire™ Handheld in TI-84 Plus Mode. Implied and explicit multiplication is given the same priority.
http://epsstore.ti.com/OA_HTML/csksxvm.jsp?nSetId=103110
But given that the TI-89 and Voyage™ 200 are the most advanced calculators out of this group, I'll stand by my decision to treat implicit multiplication and division as being of the same rank.

If (1+2) is dividing the 6 then x=1, if it is multiplying it then x=9.

The real questions is which way is the form of the equation:

or

The form of the equation will dictate the answer.
if it was the second form then the problem would have been written (6÷2)(1+2)=x
