so lets say you have a half pint brf cake, and it just finished consolidation. if i just decided not to birth it, it would eventually pin, right? so say i stuff it back in the cabinet, how long would it take to pin? approximately, of course. thanks

Depends on many factors, especially genetics. And temp. But mainly genetics. Some lineages don't pin invitro much. Others enjoy it greatly. I have an Oak Ridge culture that barely waits for 100% before pinning.
Edit- one answer to the question could be "2-6 weeks".

super. thanks doc. i'm having some rh issues, i have an extremely dry house air, apparently. so i'm hoping to keep the cakes in the jars maybe 1 week for consolidation, then a half week for extra. my cakes started pinning exactly a week after birth, but i'd rather keep them out of the 70 % rh FC as long as i can, to keep moisture.
Oh, and btw, if my cakes are drying out a small bit from the RH being low, would a little more misting counteract that? thanks dude, you rock!

Mist the hell out of them. That old info about misting like a fairy is outdated.

Last week I birthed most of my cakes 1 week after full consolidation, but left a couple in jars. I checked on them today and they were pinning like crazy. One was the size of my thumb!

alright, thanks man. i guess i kinda try to relate everything to their natural habitat. i mean, in the wild theres storms and stuff, big rain sized droplets, yet a few days later there are mushrooms. where in nature will there be a fine mist as if coming from a spray bottle? i misted them, they're turning blue a little. should be okay thanks!
