Alternatives to using heat pasteurization
    #14379445 - 04/30/11 08:36 PM (12 years, 8 months ago)

Hello,

I can't use flame or electricity to pasteurize my substrate so I would like to ask what is the best suitable alternative when using rice straw and/or rice hulls.

I've read posts talking about bleach, lime, detergent, peroxide so I would like to ask the expert growers here what is the best recommendation.

Also, would there be changes to rice bran supplementation because of this?  Would it be added after soaking/before bagging or would it be soaked with the substrate also.

Thank you.

If you're going to do pasteurization, whether heat or chemical, leave the rice bran out of it.  If you use brans, you need to sterilize.

If you don't have access to a heat source, look into bleach, lime, or formaldehyde.  In my experience, even if you have to build a wood fire, heat is superior to chemical pasteurization.

I see, I guess I'll have to go try that way then.  I get a lot of different figures for heat and duration to pasteurize so what is an ideal method?

And by the way, if not bran could I use fertilizer then?  I was thinking maybe I could sterilize the bran separately then mix into the straw after pasteurization?  Would that work in your opinion?

Thanks for all the other answers!

I think having bran in straw will naturally increase its rate of contamination regardless of whether the bran is sterile or not but i am just guessing
pasteurization, pretty sure the temps are like 150-160 for over an hour.

You can't use bran successfully, unless you sterilize.
