mad bag issues
    #14377898 - 04/30/11 02:07 PM (12 years, 9 months ago)

Hey,

I just finished PCing a set of madbags, and I found that
they filter patch was f'ed up after PCing them.

Are the patches perhaps tender right after PCing?

I ask this because I did not see the damage occur and
might have handled them while hot.

I also folded the bags so that the patch was exposed...
...perhaps they touched the pan of my AA?

Anyway, I spawned two quarts of Tampa WBS to them anyway,
in front of the flow hood, and taped the patch with micropore
tape when done.

I am concerned, but the spawn ratio was high (2:1 or higher)
so I have hopes.

Take care,

JD

i have issues with all filters also ,
dont know why

i just take some plasticy kind of multispore tape,
and stick that over,

also , look around for the small talks and teks about using a syringe stuffed with
polyfil for a filter,

just take out the plunger, stuff, and zip tie the top of the bag around it,

if you do it with the plunger opening up , you can pull out the "syringe filter"
and stick in a syringe with spores, spray that in , and replace the filter,

i do this, and it makes no holes in the bags or anything, really clean

I dont have any experience with filter patch bags, other than the one that i rtv'd a tyvek filter to and tried to PC it! I wrapped it in a dish towel, and the only spot that failed was where the filter patch was.

These are the bags that I think I will be getting: http://www.mycosupply.com/cgi-bin/shopper.cgi?preadd=action&key=SBFP01
Hope it works out for you

I have seen that JF....syringe tube filled with polyfil and
taped over with micropore tape.

I have yet to get a large no-patched uline purchase, but
I might as I go forward.

Thank you both for taking the time,

JD

You don't need to PC our Mad Bags. They come presterilized and ready to inoculate. If you meant empty spawn bags (filter patch mycobags), please call them that so that people don't confuse our product with spawn bags in general.

Filter patches on spawn bags (especially the presealable kind) may cling to the plastic of other bags or the sides of the PC which can result in parts of the top layer of filter to peel off when the bags are removed from the PC. In my experience, the filter still functions properly even with the top layer damaged. It's best to leave the filters facing out, but not in contact with other bags or the walls of the PC during cooking. The filters and/or the plastic may also stick to the sides of the PC if you're using a gas stove and the flames are coming up the sides of the PC or if you run out of water.

Hey Mike,

Good word.  Thanks.

I did mean filter patch bags.

I am sure that it was the seals touching another bag that
did the deal.  I am happy to know that the area under the
seal still has some effect.  ...some micropore tape over
it might still work.

Take care,

JD
