Life altering experience or just entertainment?
    #14377108 - 04/30/11 11:23 AM (12 years, 9 months ago)

Here is my question: I am in my 60’s and in the last year, I have been experimenting with mushrooms, Mescaline, DMT, and mdma and hoping to find out answers to my own questions in life. I've had some awesome experiences and many, many insights but I can’t seem to apply these insights in my life.

Am I just kidding myself that this will help me or is there anyone out there that has been able to change their life because of these mind altered states? I don’t know if I’m just kidding myself or is it really beneficial. If you have any suggestions, please reply. Thanks in advance!

I get life changes by combining Mushrooms with philosophcal, religous, and scientific study. To me there is not much of a good reason to use drugs other than as a fun learning experience. There must be a philosophy behind using drugs in my opinion.

I agree with you and that's what I am doing...but it seems like nothing is changing, maybe I'm to much in a hurry or trying to hard. Have you been able to really change that way you wanted too. Thanks for replying.

Yes I have been able to chang and learn what I want to, but its one of those processes thats never over, always something new to learn. Everyone has their own tools they use and put together in endless combinatoins, and sometimes there are lond periods of seemingly no progress but thats part of it. To choose to change your life IS to change your life; no one practices the piano and then doesnt learn how to play the piano.

Good luck on your journey.

Depends who you ask... Some folks will say nothing learned....

but I believe there have been some changes in my life from this stuff.... Broke through some emotional barriers... Been able to strip away all the bull in my life and see What is real, important

But, to each their own... People seem to get What they want... Fun or spiritual connections

Hope you find what you are looking for...

Peace

Your ego is constructed from the things around you. Your friends, family and possessions. You are basically a living mirror that reflects your environment.

Taking drugs isn't going to change this in the long run. It may temporarily alter you ability to reflect your surroundings, but in the end you come down and once again your ego is being constructed by the same old stimuli. Therefore, you don't change.

The only way to have a "life altering" experience is to actually alter your life. You may decide to take up meditation, study eastern philosophy, meet some new people, clean up your home, replace all your possessions and so on and so forth. By changing your environment/stimuli around you, you alter your life.

Psychedelics aren't some miracle cure. You won't take them and become zen monk tier enlightened. Psychedelics have the power to open your mind to possibilities that may have gone unseen but they don't give you anything on their own.

Learn from the experience, decide what changes you want to make in life and then DO IT.

The beauty of of natural psychedelics (cactus, fungus, vines, roots, etc) is that they leave you with the choice to forget and deny it all and step back into the "matrix" or you can choose to make it work for you.

Taking psychedelics by themselves will not guarantee that you will be enlightened or happy. Just have a look at some of the experience reports here and on the other psych forums. Lots of fools who abuse these plants and chemicals have sworn it off for the rest of their lives.

You still have to do the work mentally, emotionally, spiritually and dare I say ...physically.

As a 60 year old, you know very well that there is nothing in life worth living that comes without a price. The price you pay for making psychedlic experiences  work in every day  life is with spiritual currency of love, patience, sincerity, focus and opening yourself up to the plants in a sincere way.

Way too many people come on these forums expecting the unreasonable. Be patient, relax, be open to yourself, and be easy on yourself. Inch by inch, one day at a time...and all that good stuff. There's nothing here I've told you that you already didn't know. You'll get there

Eyup soaring m8 welcome to Shroomery

I'm an old git like you too  I'm in me 50's though so you know lots more than me.  I joined the world of psycadelic experience only a couple of years ago too.  I didnt expect to be changed by psychedelics and neither did I particularly want that to happen.  I had already spent most of my 55 years being told by others to "change" and I didn't like that at all!  For a start there's nothing really wrong with me other than me being who I am.  IMHO People should learn to accept themselves for who they are and rather than trying to become something their not they should simply try to be better.  I think its very important to learn to love yourself, (is this the "EGO"?) then you more easily know how to love others too.

I searched out mushrooms because I resented the fact that back in the 60's and 70's I had sucked up all the negative propaganda put out about LSD and that because of this I had not experienced what was obviously a most profound thing.

It didnt change me, it enhanced me; even when my son's said "eyup hes having his fix again" I would protest that its NOT a fix... its an enhancement.

But best of all it turned out that magic mushrooms are the savior of my wife who has suffered the misery of a lifetime of pain from cluster-migraine type headaches that have plagued her relentlessly.  It's this if anything thats changed me, it's changed me because now I can bring down my fist in anger and scream "WHY DID YOU LIE ?" they said it was a bad thing yet in-fact it amounts to an incredibly healing thing.

Now if I could just pluck up the courage to take higher doses I'm sure I could learn more

Hi Soaring:

Your posting is a bit of Jungian synchronicity at work.  I do not believe that you are deceiving yourself if you have taken these etheogenic sacraments in a serious (not to mean humorless) fashion. I am a lifelong cannabis user of 61 years and have credited cannabis with providing me with different perspectives on life than I belive I would have entertained.  I have never used any other psychedelics like LSD, DMT, Mescaline, MDMA, etc.  However, I am an amateur writer and am planning to use a light/threshhold dose of cubensis mushrooms in the near future.  If you have any recommendations or suggestions on trip preperations, dosages, etc., please feel free to contact me.  I hope that you find your experiences enlightening.

Glad you wrote, Mushrooms are probably the best for our age because they are gentle and only last 4-6 hours.  It will get you to places where you have never been before and gives you new insights much deeper than weed. I’ve only been taking with for a year and never did that in my earlier life.  Here is what I recommend for you because of our age but please be very careful on the dose you take. I had a rough trip on Cactus and I’ll never do that again because it lasted 14 hours and I believe I took too much. I found out the hard way that it’s better to take too little and get nothing than over dosing and ending up with health problems. My heart kept pounding for weeks and I had to go the doctors to make sure I was ok. If you have any problems with blood pressure or heart, DO NOT TAKE THIS!  Go slow at first my by taking a gram and if that’s ok you can work your way up to 2 grams. I know that a lot of younger people would suggest 3-5 grams but not for our age. Usually at our age, our bodies are more sensitive.  Good Luck and feel free to write back after your trip.

Well you already got some great advice here  the only thing I would add is they can have a influence on you... if you choose to let them? they can offer new perspectives and different ways to look at yourself. without your normal daily mindset getting in the way.

For me I like to think about the metaphysical world a lot when I'm on mushrooms. and my mind goes sooooooo deep listening to music. And feeling euphoric just pondering life. My views have changed alot I feel less afraid of death, feel more in tune and closer to music, nature, and animals. and I don't sweat the small stuff anymore.

But People are very lazy and are always looking for a magic diet pill, or a pill to make them happy, YOU are the only who can do it... the magic pill is already inside of you. So maybe some of these things can help if you choose to make changes. or at the very least you just want to feel euphoric bliss for 4-6 hrs that alone could be beneficial. Just  as relaxation and meditation can sooth your mind.

Keep up the fight young Jedi and may the force be with you!!!:sunny:

psychedelics definitely give me the tools to change myself. whatever block and impasses exist in my brain are removed, and my ideas are allowed to communicate with eachother. i'm a pretty cold person. people call me laid-back, etc, but i understand that i'm just hiding inside myself. somewhere in my life i forgot how to sense my feelings. i would never have known that without mushrooms.
i have much to work on, and i always will. so will all of us. be as a flower that is continuously opening in bloom.

Seriously?  That's very interesting.  You should be a living testament to the overestimated dangers of long term cannabis use.

I'm curious what you think about these dangers, being somebody who can speak from experience.  I've got lots of people that argue that long term smoking of any kind is extremely harmful.  There just aren't all that many people they can study that have been cannabis users for so long, so it's hard to come to a conclusion about it.

Hi Vicarious Greg:

I should have clarified the statement that I am a 61 year old who has used cannabis since I was 21 years old [40 years total].  I tend to use small amounts (2 to 4 tokes)5 to 7 days per week from a glass pipe.  I would prefer, and encourage all other cannabis users, to use a vaporizer if possible. Unfortunately, the price for a good vaporizer is out of my budget for now. My lungs have always checked out normal but I don't smoke tobacco and I exercise moderately (bike, hiking, walking). Hope this resolves any misinterpretation.

What if a life altering experience was entertaining?

And what if this entertainment just so happened to be a life altering experience?

These are just words used to describe the indescribable. In other words; Smoalk moar N,N-
