Q-tip test accuracy
    #14377646 - 04/30/11 01:16 PM (12 years, 8 months ago)

I've swabbed these cakes now for the past week, what I believe to be bruising from excessive touching has gotten a lot worse. I was wondering if there were any mycology professionals

I was also wondering about the shiny spot on the one cake. Is it bacterial, and can I get rid of it?

Badly dry. Dunk
The white patch might also be trich, if so it will explode after the dunk.
Rewet and fluff your perlite while your cakes are out.

Overnightish. Probably want to harvest the bigger mushrooms, ok to leave pins.

It's just awkward and you're likely to bump them. Not harmful to them as long as they get good airflow afterwards.
But they are big enough for snacking right now.

Another option would be to fill the top divot of the cakes with wet verm and try to hydrate that way, refilling as you can.

You can also set the cake in a saucer of water overnight to hydrate during mid-flush.

There is no q-tip test.  It's total bunk.  Bruised mycelium will easily rub off on a q-tip and this has resulted in thousands of perfectly fine, but dry cakes being tossed out over the years due to that misinformation.
