Pressure cooker help

Hi, Was hoping to get some help with buying a pressure cooker.
Been reading a bit here and there on them, but cant seem to find one that i feel will work for sure. Im going to be using rye grain, so if ive been reading correctly i need something that will give me 15 psi?
My problem is, i can find them around the place, but next to none of them can tell me what psi they go to.
Is there a way of figuring it out before i buy one?
I have a gauge i can fit myself, but that's not gonna change what its actually capable of doing, and i guess there's no point fitting the gauge only to find out it only does 8 psi or something like that.
Is 8 enough if its left to cook for longer?
cheers.

Those little PCs will work ok. But don't pay full price for one. Get one at a thrift store. For full price, a big PC is the way to go, cheaper over time.

If you're in the states, 80 bucks will get you a 23qt Presto that has been working perfectly for me.
$200 (I think) gets you a bad-ass All-American.

Definitely go with a big PC that was my biggest mistake when I started. If you want to know the psi take an extra trip to the store and write down the name and size and google it.

IMO, you also need a little PC, so no harm in buying it first. But again, get a used one.

I got super lucky and got an awesome All-American from Craigslist for $40!!!!! I vote for checking the thrift stores/ebay/craigslist. I've used a couple of other PCs, neither had PSI gauges. One was old and had a rubber seal. It had gotten too old and shattered half of my LC jars. I would never have anything but an All-American now.

cool ok no worries. Im in Australia, there's alot of people trying to sell crap, which is a given round these parts.
Obvioulsy i would prefer to buy a small cheapy (thanks Doc_T ) but at the same time ive had couple of failed attepmts at this so i dont wanna go down that road again if i can help it. So maybe a bigger one would be better.
That said, its a whole other mission trying to find one. Buying overseas costs me a killing in postage. Thanks for the insight, will keep checking round the place till i find one.
There are a few smaller ones here (not sure of the pressure tho) that i can have a look at i guess.

Having the same predicament, might I suggest this:

180AUD for Presto, to your door. I searched for months before I decided to shell out the cash, and I'm glad I did. It'll fit 7 quart jars or 12/24 half-pints, IIRC.
If you'd like a local source for ball mason jars, PM me.

Hey Fischer, Thanks man/mam which ever. I appreciate that. Its a little more than i wanted to spend by about 150 bucks (lol) but im starting to see what you mean about just biting the bullet and getting a good one, which is what i will do.
Thanks again. I hope this will make my journey easier this time.
I have some spore prints here that i want to try. Been told you can just scrape them off into the jars, or make a syringe. What would you say is better?

spore prints must be re-hydrated for 24/hours at least before inoculating into grains. So prepare a syringe, wait, then inject.

Honestly I never had any problems with just boiling, but it seems like my house has a really low contaminant load as I've worked with agar in open air and had no problems (yet, fingers crossed).
For your first grow or two, try without one, and if you decide that quicker sterilisation times, larger sterilisation capacity and the ability to work with grains and bulk sub is worth the expense, get the presto and never look back (and keep an eye out for something second hand in the meantime).
How are you doing your PF-Tek? Hit up http://www.mushroomvideos.com/BRF-Pf-Tek and use that as your guide, as it sounds like you might be in need of a proper foundation (scraping spores into jars may work, but it's going to vastly increase opportunity for contamination and waste spores.
For syringes, what I do is get 10ml hypos from the local pharmacy, with 18-gauge drawing needles (which is safer, easier to use for LCS because of the bigger bore and is less likely to make them think you're gonna be putting them in your arm).
They'll be sterile in their packs, so just clean your work area wih Glen-20, wipe down with metho, then:
- Boil some water on the stove for 20 mins (I don't go that long, but until you can get consistent successful results, you'll want to be as careful as you can). - Pour 10ml per syringe into a small/shot glass and place a large jar (wiped inside and out with metho) over the top - Leave it to cool (to room temp, or you risk killing your spores) - Flame sterilise the tip of a knife then wipe with an alcohol swab (metho-soaked cotton wool ball). - Get out your print, remove the jar and scrape 1/4 square inch per syringe into the shotglass. - Put a syringe together, suck some water from the glass, and shoot it back in from just above the surface of the water to disperse the spores. - Suck up 10ml,wipe needle with swab, recap it and repeat (assemble, suck, shoot, suck) for each syringe
Follow RR's procedure in the video I linked to and you should be set.

$207US, to be precise (aww yee, parity, bitches!). And the majority of that is posting a huge box halfway across the world.
Pressure-cookers seem to have fallen out of use down-under, at least from what I've (not) been able to track down.
A dozen Ball quart jars cost me 20 bucks and 25 shipping from interstate.

Thanks so much mate. Just found out i can borrow a pressure cooker from somewhere, unsure of the pressure of it, but will see what happens when i get it.
Im using rye grain to grow with. I jst wana make sure it gets the right amount of pressure or whatever so its all good with no contaminants.
Thanks again for that info.

"Home canning" is very much a US-based hobby. But pressure cooking happens worldwide. Restaurant supply houses may have them. Also medical autoclaves have been used by some members.

True dis. I actually meant canners (as you can buy pissy little PCs easily, though they're expensive as hell and don't usualy reach 15psi).
I couldn't find any restaurant suppliers who could offer me anything for less than the presto (only called a couple), and autoclaves also seem to run more serious dosh than a newbie needs/would want to spend.
