P. tuberaster grow

I always wanted to have a go at P. tuberaster but couldn't find a culture, and never found one in years of mushroom hunting. Finally I nearly trod on one growing out of a small branch on the ground. My camera was broken at the time so I got no pics unfortunately. I cloned it and took spores. The shroom was quite mature so I wasn't sure how viable the cloned tissue would be. I did some multispore germination and isolated several strains that I'm now growing out. This grow is from a single strain isolated from a multispore plate. Spawn was wheat through wedge transfer. Grown on standard oak sd/bran/gypsum block it fruited 3 weeks from inoculation.

It says in some books I've got that they are too tough to eat, but these are about the same firmness as shiitake. They taste good, a bit like cep to me.

I forgot to say, the P. tuberaster we get in the UK are non-sclerotia forming and fruit directly from the wood. They are apparently usually found growing directly on fallen branches.

Polyporus tuberaster has pores like a bolete or turkey tail. Hard to see from the picture but on the underside of the cap it has hundreds of holes, kind of sponge-like.

Of all the strains you isolated is this the only one to fruit yet?

DD, I have only tried 2 strains so far, the other one has formed primordia but seems to have stalled. I have one strain which was way more aggressive than the others in some wood rotting experiments, and it forms primordia on agar. I have high hopes for that one and am making some spawn from it at the moment.I'll post again if I get good results.

Very respectable job there lionsman. So you have taken spore prints then? What conditions did you fruit it in? Thank you for posting. This is an unusual one.

Thanks for your comments, I haven't taken spores from these, as I still have about a dozen strains isolated from multispore plates. It's going to take me ages to go through these
