yeah, well they say the early bird gets the worm. The only hunters who beat you to the spot are the ones who hunt at night, but because its dark, unless they know the spot really well they will miss heaps of the good ones. Hunting at night is probably the best bet if you know your patches really well, because you can just go directly to the exact spot, look around with a torch, pick the good ones and be on your way.

Bush shrooms, at last! HAHAHA suck on these suburbinites! Found in the high ranges in south east vic, growing in shady, wet grass along side old 4wd tracks. I didn't find too many around the actual trees, only really in the open areas. The first shroom I found for the season was a ripper, it bruised the deepest, richest blue I've ever seen a mushroom bruise (it's the one in the first photo). This is about 2/3 of my find. You can check out my galleries if you wana see the other photos I took today.

Hey, watch out, first post coming atcha!
How important is gill colour when hunting subs in Melbourne?
This is my first season and I seem to be finding some with gills that are scooped inwards and light in colour, and some with gills that protrude more and are darker in colour.
Both stain an unmistakable blue Both have an unmistakable purplish brown spore print
However, the ones with the light-coloured, scooped-in gills are much more difficult to get a spore print from.
Does anyone here know if there are a few types of subs around melbourne?

i used to wake up at 5-6am, an hour or so earlier then when i had to be at uni or work, and go picking in the morning. It's great. I'd get to my spots just as the sun was rising. Awesome 30 min bike ride watching the sun rise, picking in complete serenity. Still arrive at work on time and everything. it's great.
That actually sounds pretty darn spectacular! Now I'll see if I have the discipline to get up that much earlier...
Dont know how you guys can do it... i go to bed usually way too late to get up for 5 am...

Nice finds Anarkiz but I reckon the shroom in that pic isn't a sub. In my short time hunting I've never seen a sub with those sort of gills, specially the 'wavy' edges. :\
I'm no TI so don't take my word for it, but think it may be a sub.. just a weird one. I've picked some with similar wavyness:
Either way i'd post and ID request on that one to get some TIs just to be safe..

maybe the lighter ones are just large but immature, ... and have had a bit too much water?

I dont think its a sub, just looks too weird and more green than blue and grey. Gallerina perhaps.
Toss it.

i really need a camera, i found a stretch like this that goes on forever yesterday.. huge stretches of the ground were purple with spores..
just took what looked perfect or interesting, like some perfect little cyanescens style wavy caps growing through some mossy ground-cover...

if I have some mushies with caps the same colour as most of the sub photo's in here(maybe a bit darker though they were drying as I found them), tan gills and blue bruising is it pretty much safe to assume they are subs?
I have done my research and I'm pretty sure they are but I just want to be sure that there are no poisinous ones which match those criteria. They were found at the base of a pine tree too. Sorry I can't take any pics. Thanks in advance.

No, not pretty much safe to assume. It can be very dangerous to assume. There are lookalikes which can turn your liver into a foul tasting pate. It's better not to take chances. Have you done a spore print yet, are they bruising an obvious blue colour?

they all bruised nicely blue, I haven't done a spore print on them because they were already pretty dry when I picked them. I showed them to a few more experienced shroomers who told me they were active so a few hours ago I ate them. If they were poisonous would I be feeling any normal shroom effects?

If they were poisonous you'd feel sick in a few hours. If they were toxic you'd find out in a few weeks when your liver fails. You wouldn't be feeling any psychedelic effects if this was the case.
By your description it sounds as if you had the right ones. How are you feeling?

im definitely feeling the psychedelic effects, though I'm feeling a bit sick. I think that's a combination of normal shroom nausea, recent illness and just that uncertain thought in the back of my head that they might be poison. Thanks for your help

Those look to be Psilocybe subaeruginosa, a closer photo would be nice though!
Oh, sorry Feelers, i see which ones you mean now, they are definitely an active Psilocybe species, it would take a microscopic examination to tell what species it is though!
