My mate and I went out today. It was our first time shrooming. We couldnt find any active ones. Here are some pics. It'd be good if someone could ID the ones in the tub, they were the closest ones we could find to active ones.

Hi Ibrahimovic: I think that the 3rd photo you have there is of Aminita Muscaria (sp?).
I went out today and found my first subs for the season:

Just 3 in total, but I was pretty stoked none the less (especially given how dry things've been).
Well done to everyone who's been finding / posting pics. Nice early start to this year's season.

The top two pics look like Gymnopilus, the third looks like an old beaten up Amanita muscaria, as for what's in your box I am not sure.

theres days when it seems like you get out the car and subs are at your feet, then I've spent 3 days in the hills like 6-8 hours at a time and found nothing.
Helps if you know where your looking, and just so you know your in the right area.

Went back to my ever growing lovely spot tonight for a late night pick, didn't feel like carrying a big bag so I only picked about a hundred maybe 150, and i was finding my mortal enemies the millipedes and slaters were munching away at them. (Can't blame them) haha left plenty for next pick though.
Few photos, not complete pick.

Nice to see many people stumbling upon actives this early and in woodchips.
Photographed these a week or so ago -

Considering going on my first hunt today, doubt I'll get anything though. Gotta wait for a mate to get back from holiday so he can impart his wisdom upon me Until then, I'll be reading up and following these kind of threads.
Related, what books/resources would you suggest for a newbie? Bonus points if they're eBooks/resources - I'm considering buying a tablet (Motorola Xoom, EeePad transformer or similar) so I can chuck a heap of images/guides/books on it for on the go learning/identifying.

Lol I doubt you will find much in the form of an ebook I had that great idea that i could take my tablet out in the filed and ID fungi, but ultimately libraries and books are the best.
Try starting with some State books of what you have and go from there.

Well just checked 3 spots with absolutely no luck at all, I'm devastated and tired lol
Didn't even see any inactives, only fungus I saw at all was some puffballs.
I even jumped a barbed wire fence to get into a pine plantation that was sectioned off from the rest of the forest, looked perfect, but found nothing!!
