After many many years of playing guitar for my own enjoyment and emotional release, I have decided that I would like to start forming something a little more structered from my random doodlings.
Essentially what I would like to know is, what decent programs are out there that would allow me to record some guitar work directly from the amp into my soundcard and go back and add other insturments on top. I don't really have access to any midi devices at this point, just looking for somewhere to start out really.
I have some experience with fruity loops and cubase. I have only ever mucked around on FL and not used cubase for over 10 years. I am assuming FL will be the way to go, just wondering if there are any other affordable/free options out there really.

Fl can be a great tool to start with. If you're really tight on budget, you can use Audacity. It's 100% free, supports multi-track recording, and maybe not all that fancy, but if all you're looking for is recording from the mic or line input, it gets the job done, plus gives you a few extra features. I've actually recorded some of my first songs through Audacity and they turned out sounding pretty decent. If you really wanna enhance your guitar sound on the computer, you can even look into Guitar Rig (though it'll be pricey, especially on top of recording software). If you wanna make other instrument sounds on the computer and don't have money for professional programs, Anvil Studio is a good free one. The generic MIDI sounds it comes with might sound like shit but you can always download free soundfonts and make them sound nicer and a little more realistic.
What sort of guitar/amp do you have and what genres do you play? Also, this is off topic, but that middle pic in your sig is simply beautiful

I play a Jackson kelly through a laney gc120 amp, amongst a couple of others. As for style it varies a lot which is why I would like to get more recorded and sort through the little bits and pieces I play to expand on them. I really like pushing guitar sound with effects, tremelo, slide and feedback. I generally end up either playing a very distorted slide blues or a more melodic style that lets me explore new guitar sounds.
The best success I've had playing guitar was with a close friend who plays bass like a madman. We seemed to work well together without really even thinking about it if that makes sense.
As for recording, I don't want to use software to alter the sound so much, I am looking for something that will let me slot in bits of guitar and then add other sounds to that.
And thanks for commenting on the pic haha it is Cortinarius rotundisporus or close too.

I am also hoping to record some didge through a mic and then effects peddles but that will be later down the track.

Nice man! If all you want is straight up recording, then I'd go with Audacity or at least check it out. It'll let you record different instruments into individual tracks and mix them for you. Here's a link: http://audacity.sourceforge.net/ All you need is some way to connect your stuff to the computer's mic jack and you're good to go.

Makes complete sense, that's a sign of pure musicianship! Jamming with the right people is one of the awesomest things to experience as a musician, in my opinion. Keep it up, hope you find what you're looking for and record some mad tunes
