Pink floyd-ish instrumental guitar playing?
    #14370301 - 04/28/11 11:20 PM (12 years, 10 months ago)

I really like the guitar playing in pink floyd and I would like to find someone that plays that style of guitar instrumentally.

Kind of like the album "Blues" by Jimi Hendrix...just straight up guitar playing.

Anybody come to mind?

It's a rare bird. Try Sir Richard Bishop, and John Fahey as well as Davy Graham. They are acoustic players, and tend to lean harder on the folk aspect of the instrument on occasions, but all are famous for their instrumental compositions which feature primarily guitar.

In the Electric field... Well, I hope that kind of thing is being made somewhere. I would Suggest some post-rock for you, but the genre is often painfully simple, and anti-virtuosic in it's improvisations.

If you want pure instrumental guitar prowess, you must check out Joe Satriani. Not really pink-floydish, but he pretty much pioneered the instrumental rock guitar music. He was actually heavily influenced by Hendrix and started playing after hearing of Henrix's death (though his music isn't really too similar to Hendrix). Others great instrumental guitar artists are Steve Vai, Eric Johnson, Yngwie Malmsteen, Michael Angelo Batio, Paul Gilbert, the list goes on haha

I agree. Post Rock is amazing. Definitely not the virtuoso stuff, but some of the music is really deep and beautiful.

I like steve vai, joe satriani, and paul gilbert a lot, as well as bucket head. The Hendrix shoes are hard to fill though.
