MONOTUBS: Great first flushes, poor subsequent flushes. Why?
    #14375136 - 04/30/11 12:31 AM (10 years, 16 days ago)

Hello,

As the title above says, Im having trouble with my subsequent flushes.  My first flushes are great, Im yielding about 4 ounces dry off the first round.  But the pinsets on the later flushes are going pretty bad.  I notice that the top layer of mycelium gets rather hard and leathery.  Few mushrooms if any grow from the top, and most if not all of the second harvest comes from side pinning.  I always dunk my tubs for a few hours after harvest but it has never seemed to help the top layer recover.  BTW I go uncased, and am growing golden teachers.  Is there anything I can do to help improve my later flushes? Attached are some pictures of previous grows, but they are only of the first harvest.  Sorry I don't have any other pictures.

Dunk before it becomes leathery. And/or mist more. And/or use a humidifier in the room.

Would adding a casing layer help any?  I have heard from RR that they are not necessary with cubes, and can potentially introduce contaminants, but many people like them.

What substrate are you using??? there is no need to dunk a mono tub. just hydrate the substrate well the first time. try adding a lot more verm

Im using 1 brick of coir, 1.5 quarts of verm, and about half a quart of gypsum spawned with about 6 quarts of WBS.  I have been under the impression that it is very important to dunk a monotub for decent subsequent flushes.

i too use 1 brick of coir and 6 qts of wbs however i use way more verm. i started out using 2 qts but now i use more prob like 4 or maybe even more idk i eyeball it. It could also be the quality of your coco and verm.  I just like to get a nice fluffy substrate that the mycelium can easily move throwgh and will be able to soak up alot of water just try mixing in more verm and water. i also use way more than 4 qts of water. if u didnt boil enough, hot tap water can be added, cause the rest will be hot enough.

I hope that helps.i normally get a little over half of what i got the first flush if not 3/4.

coir is often referred to as a "one flush wonder", many people have the same problem as you when spawning to coir/coir based mix
