Another flowhood build

Hi! First, I want to thank you all for being here, especially RR with his posts about flow hoods, it helped me a lot! Thank you! I did this with help of my friend who is awesome. This flowhood is 61x45cm and has no screws between fan and a filter box and it makes it much easier to manipulate with it. Since I've had it I rarely occur any contamination and it is worth the money. I cannot imagine myself working without it again! If you don't have one, get one!
This is how it began :

Fan box:
Between these 2 boards with holes comes the pre-filter:
Filter box :

The whole thing put together:

The white board is made out of corian, it is a material used for laboratory and kitchen tables, it doesn't have micro pores and is very easy to maintain. I use it as a protection for filter and as a working space while my flowhood is turned on. Inoculating substrate bags and working with agar is now pleasure. Hope you enjoyed the pictures.

How deep is your filter? It looks thin, but I could just be looking at it wrong.
Awesome build tho, amazing craftsmanship!

Thank you all for your compliments! It feels great having something like this!
@Ozzy : I would love it that my grandkids have it and use it like I do. Every part of it is replaceable at any time. No glue except on the sides. The guy who helped me is an engineer. He never did stuff like this before and before he began to do it, he did calculations and auto Cad sketches. He wanted everything to be perfect! His knowledge, my luck!
@MolecularConcept : The fan is stronger than needed, but I wanted a stronger fan when the filter fills with dust and other particles that it doesn't affect its flow strength. The fan is around 600cfm(1000m3/h) and as you can see I have a power regulator to regulate its speed.
@fngbronco : The filter is 150mm deep, but it is really 75mm deep and other 75mm are for the housing. It is HEPA H14 filter and contamination doesn't pass through it. I rarely occur some bacteria, but that is due to improper sterilization of my scalpel of my hands in the wrong position.
If you have anything else to ask, I'll be glad to answer you. Take care

great looking piece of machinery every one i make looks like a 2 year old made it (not good at finishing) but yours is artisan you should talk to your buddy and make some more like one or two extra and sell them on crackliest. There is a guy in portland that sells 2x4s for 900$ and stamets are around 1200. They cost less than 500$ to make.

Amazing craftsmanship! Congratulations!!
This is the complete opposite of the flow hood I'm building right now. Despite my best efforts and planning, nothing fits exactly right. I designed this cool blower sealing system, and I built it today. Masonite rings around the circular blower with 1/16" rubber cut in circles as gaskets. It's airtight, but it looks like crap! Well, at least it will be on the back wall and hidden.

Very nice workmanship. Everyone who builds a flow hood can't imagine ever going back to being without one. RR

Thank you all for your comments, I'm glad you like it! RR you're right. Before I had it I couldn't imagine what would be like to work in front of it. Now I can't imagine what would be like to work without it. Flowhoods are very addictive And this one is sufficient for a medium scale production which I'm planning to start by the end of the next year. Just have to sort some things up. The most difficult part of all is to find a suitable fruiting space, but something will come up
@ Terry M : as long as it is functional, it is good! Believe me, when you try it, you'll know

That's some very fine woodwork and engineering. That flowhood would make just about anyone a happy camper Hacendado. Whether they needed it or not.

My 48"x12" flow hood became operational today!

It's not stained yet and the surface not fully finished (and can never look like Hacendado's ), but it works. So I'm using it tomorrow for some agar work. The blower seal assembly came out better than I thought. There was one unnecessary part, and that happened to be the seriously ugly one.

Thanks so much! I love this hobby too. I couldn't resist that 48" HEPA filter after I saw I had counter space for it. Alkaloids: The flow hood is actually sitting on the counter. The blowing (a relatively shallow mixed flow 8" duct blower) is inside and attached to the back wall of the flow hood. I used it today -- from 5:30 AM to 12:30 PM!! I poured a sleeve of plates, and after cooling, noc'ed them with some other plates, 2 syringes, and a test of recovering distilled water stored mycelium.
Hopefully, I set a fast enough speed on the 2-speed blower and didn't screw up this work. I hope there's some margin for error in the flow rate. I tried RR's lighter test, but I'm not a smoker and this was my first experience with a lighter. Idiot that I am, I burned myself and had trouble observing the flame angle. I did the lighter test again after finishing up, and I think my speed was too slow. I went inside and connected up the higher speed, which gives me a greater than 45 degree (maybe 60) flame angle. Oh well, learn by doing.

I don't recall doing a lighter test with my old flowhood, but i did measure it with a candle. Essentially the same. I found the recommended angle to provide too slow of an airflow. My flowrate was closer to 140-150 LFPM that i experienced in a laboratory flowhood.
Could be just me. I had results that i found acceptable and i could get the air in the entire room filtered once every few minutes which was great since i would just turn the hood on 30 minutes before sterile work was to commence.
What did you have in the distilled water?
Congratulations on breaking your flowhood in.

Hi Alkaloids,
I've actually got a second blower, so I could if necessary increase the air flow to as much as 2x. Trade off between flow rate and fan noise. I didn't know the static pressure of the prefilter, so I allowed for a worst case static pressure of 0.5 inches for this (same as my HEPA). This filter turns out not to offer much air flow resistance. If I have to, I have everything necessary to build a second back with a pair of blower holes instead of just one. Don't want to do it unless absolutely necessary, because cutting holes with an adjustable hole saw is a bitch, at least for me!
As for the distilled water, I am reanimating some Calocybe indica to check its viability. I'm in the process of switching from slant long-term storage to distilled water, and have about a dozen varieties in distilled water vials so far.
