Doing ethnography for ethics class - need help!
    #14372817 - 04/29/11 02:14 PM (12 years, 8 months ago)

Hello all!

I'm doing a digital ethnography of Shroomery for my Digital Media, Law and Ethics class. (My boyfriend and I have been using this site a lot for our own personal projects, which is why I chose it.) I'd like to interview some people, either via the forums or by PM if you prefer, on your impressions of the site and some legal and ethical issues that might arise from using and posting on a site like this.

I'm posting some of my general questions below, feel free to answer either here or to PM me if you wish. If you feel I've totally missed the point of something and you want to add your own comments or questions you think I should be asking instead, let me know what and why! Thanks in advance for your help

How did you find out about Shroomery and what attracted you to join the site?

How long have you been a member?

Do you use the site primarily for growing instructions, to interact in other forum areas, both, something else, etc? Do you post pictures or other content on here?

What are the best and worst parts of the site, in your opinion?

Have you ever received or given bad advice on this site? Do you feel any sort of obligation to give advice or guidance when you know an answer?

Do you ever worry about anyone having something bad happen to them or their op based on your advice, or do you consider it to be more of a free will "you didn't have to listen to me" sort of place?

How do you decide who to trust on the site?

Do you ever worry about the legal implications of posting and/or maintaining content (such as pictures) on this site? If yes, why? If no, why?

Have you ever seen evidence of minors on the site? If so, does that bother you at all?

Is the site well moderated? For example, if someone is violating the forum rules or trolling in general, are they warned quickly? Is there anything you'd rather see changed?

You might get a better response in the Pub.

1) You can't get married to your spouse who is the same sex as you.
2) You can't have an abortion no matter how much you don't want a child.
3) You can't have a certain plant in your possession or you'll get locked up with a rapist and a murderer.

4) We need a smaller, less-intrusive government.

Yeah, I've posted in the Pub as well, I was just trying to up my response rate a bit by posting in other forums as well.

How did you find out about Shroomery and what attracted you to join the site?

I think I found the site looking up info about magic mushrooms when I was a youngster.

How long have you been a member?

I've been coming here for about 9 years, on and off

Do you use the site primarily for growing instructions, to interact in other forum areas, both, something else, etc? Do you post pictures or other content on here?

I use the mushroom hunting forum mostly for sharing the joy and pics of my finds and checking out what other people are finding. I also like to read up on the growing and chemistry forums to check for interesting things to learn about and the pub and psychadelic discussion for socializing and spreading info that I already know to others.

What are the best and worst parts of the site, in your opinion?

The community is the best by far, and I think the recipe section of the main site is pretty crappy. I'd like to see more edible mushrooms recipes, not just stuff about making your shrooms taste less.

Have you ever received or given bad advice on this site? Do you feel any sort of obligation to give advice or guidance when you know an answer?

I've seen some bad advice go out from people who don't know what they're talking about, but overall I think all the regulars are pretty responsible about getting the information out there and providing references. Usually if someone doesn't know what they're talking about someone else will come along pretty fast and correct it with some legit info.

Sometimes I feel obligated to answer when I have personal experience in something, I'm big on spreading accurate information around to everybody. That's a big part of the reason I participate, besides to show off my sexy fruiting body booty

Do you ever worry about anyone having something bad happen to them or their op based on your advice, or do you consider it to be more of a free will "you didn't have to listen to me" sort of place?

Generally if you post a question here, you will get a lot of responses, some educated and some not, and ultimately it's up to you to be responsible in drawing conclusions from a wide variety of sources. I take everything I read here with a grain of salt, and so should everybody when they're consulting the opinions of random people whether over the internet or in person. That being said, it's pretty easy to pick out the educated responses and there is a core of very trustworthy people who back up their claims and will point you to places where you can research it yourself. If someone comes here saying, "Should I try this drug?" People are generally pretty responsible in directing that person to information concerning the drugs effects and clearing up misconceptions that the person may having regarding their expectations, rather than just telling them to go for it or not too.

How do you decide who to trust on the site?

Just like meeting people in person, over a period of time I will build up trust for individuals who consistently show that they are reliable and trustworthy info sources.

Do you ever worry about the legal implications of posting and/or maintaining content (such as pictures) on this site? If yes, why? If no, why?

I don't ever post pictures of myself that I think could be considered evidence. I'm not sure what the implications of saying "I did such and such drug" or "I did this extraction" are, but I don't see people getting busted for that so I don't worry and try to stay pretty much anonymous.

Have you ever seen evidence of minors on the site? If so, does that bother you at all?

Some of the really uneducated drug questions are probably coming from minors, but it doesn't bother me, because I really think all people should be able to make educated decisions before they start using drugs. If I had been educated about drugs younger, weed would have been the first drug I tried rather than methamphetamine. Instead all I heard from my mom was "don't try pot" and when someone offered crank to me, I did not know that it was methamphetamine. My bad, I was irresponsible, but I was also 14, which legally means that my parents are responsible for me. It's a good thing that after that I got responsible about my drug education by coming to places like the shroomery and erowid, because DARE sure as hell isn't working and even if your parents were old hippies, they are terrible sources of information just because they didn't have access to it back then.

Is the site well moderated? For example, if someone is violating the forum rules or trolling in general, are they warned quickly? Is there anything you'd rather see changed?

Shroomery mods are the best, which is good because Moderation is key. There's always a nice constant stream of hilarious trolls getting banned right out of the pub, hanging around just long enough to provide us with lulz, and I don't see them in the serious forums interfering with important stuff.
