I think I figured out why ovoids like knotweed. Knotweed that grows close to the banks gets flooded, acting as a giant filter to catch wood debris that is floating through the water. There is also a microclimate within a knotweed patch because of how dense the foliage grows, no direct sunlight reaches the ground.
Has anyone confirmed that ovoids use knotweed as a substrate, or are they growing on the wood that collects around it?

I can confirm they love wood.

i experimented a few seasons ago colonizing chunks of the dead knotweed stocks with cyanescen mycelium. it spreads like wild fired being hollow. i have a patch under the knotweed in my back yard now. its an outstanding microclimate like you said. and it draws moisture i think to the giant rootmass which keeps the myc happy.

There are some spore prints in my post history under the ID threads, and you can also see a print on top of the caps in my last set of images in this thread. They are dark brown when thin, and more of a black when thick, though this might vary regionally.

Well, becuase of all the rains in the area that I was heading for yesterday, i am putting it off until tommarow morning, hopefully the weather will be more permitting then.

Took a few hours yesterday to comb through riverside weeds in upstate New York. Nice soggy weather - didn't find any ovoids though. I know it takes people a while before they find them, but I'm a bit uncertain if any grow this far north.

There have been ovoids found in upstate NY. thedudenj's patch last year was in that area and lasted further into the summer than the rest due to lower temps

Yes, I'm quite a bit further north than NYC : ]. There's one observation in upstate NY on the map, but its location spans 5 states and 2 countries (if I'm reading it correctly ^^). Umm I'm going to be back home in New Jersey in a few days, so I look forward to continuing my search there.

Found a patch today, but I was late to the party. Half were already rotten, and they were fatties.

Those two big caps are 6 cm.

Nj is drenched. Got caught in torrential downpourment while scoping around river today- it should stop raining so water can recede leaving platters of ovoids. that'd be nice.
