In response to n2s: If it happened to wash some existing wood chips containing ovoid myc into the area then they may take off. As with most wood lovers you won't see anything until at least next year since they have to actually colonize the wood and probably go through the seasonal changes to induce fruiting.
On that note though I think the next 2 years, as long as they aren't extremely dry, will be amazing years. So much spawn was moved around and into various floodplains that didn't have them already. Not to mention the saturation of a ton of wood chips that may have stayed relatively dry in previous years.

So let's say someone has this large well established patch along a creek bed, and that this creek bed flooded over pretty bad this year (pretty much the story in many places along the Ohio this year). Would anyone suppose that perhaps they will not come up in this spot this year since they have to colonize a bunch of new material? Or would it be the opposite since they patch seems so well established, and one could expect bunches from a place like this this year?

Found this guy while walking the dog. Guess they're growing in a couple places round here.

It got beat up a lil bit in my pocket.

The trees in the picture are maple (not entirely sure if they are boxelder maple) and the mulch is not typical lawn center mulch, but rather purely chipped wood from what I assume was clean up of downed trees at the park. Here are the pictures. That is a creek in the background also. Sadly, there is no japanese knotweed in the area.

The very first patch of Ovoids that I found were on a big woodchip pile like that. I found about 3 walmart bags full on that woodchip pile. You should definitely try to put some stem butts in that thing to help it along for next year. Good Luck hunting!!

Me and my friend found two huge colonies of these mushrooms in central jersey. The mushrooms love growing in man-made wood chip for some strange reason, they also flourish in uprooted trees

So, I've been out for the past 5 days going to different creeks and streams near my area in SW PA--all have turned out unfruitful for ovoids, but I've found morels both by streams and away from them.
Should I just keep going to different streams and checking them out? It seems like a lot of you guys find them almost exclusively in wood chips, but I haven't found any chipped areas near creeks in the woods.

The largest fruitings I have found are within 20' of the bank, in sandy soil. Make sure to push back the grasses where they could be hidden.

Bejesus could those mushrooms get any more blue ?
mylfgur perhaps mixing up your hunts with forays to man-made woodchip beds near to you would be a worthwhile exercise if your luck is out in the natural setting at the minute.
As with other mushrooms I'm sure once a few found and you take note of the surrounding habitat the hunting will become so much easier.
Most of all not giving up and carrying on the search relentlessly is, I'm sure, key.
Perhaps people could post up some habitat shots, I'm certainly interested for my own reasons -finding similar habitat for species introduction over here

I am in love with species, and I've never even seen one. Im jelous that you all get to hunt in the woods for your psilocybes. Great photos everyone.

Hey do any of you know if TN (along the Appalachia mnts) would have ovoids. I've been studying and it seems like (obviously) they like major rivers and they seem very popular along the Appalachia Mountains. I know they are normally found more in the north, but it's been particularly chilly here. Think theres a chance at finding ovoids 'round these parts? I know of quite4 a few good streams and shit.

Somebody found Ovoids in Georgia not long ago. I bet there's a great possibility they're in TN too, :P

I'm only two hours away from TN in the va appalachians and they seem to be almost anywhere I look that has a pile of fine wood debris right beside the river. Id bet they're in tn too.

I guess, Psilocybe ovoideocystidiata can be found everywhere in the Appalachian Mountains, from Maine to (northern) Georgia. Time will tell.
