This species reappear in the Fall?

My wood-chip  patches in Europe fruit always spring AND fall.

Ovoids fruiting on September 30, 2010 in Europe:
http://mushroomobserver.org/66924?q=4dVq

A friend of mine living in Ohio told me, that in Ohio in the wild
this is  98% a spring fruiting mushroom and that fall fruiting seems way more common
in cultivated wood-chip patches.

I swing by my patch often in the fall, and I have never found a single one....in 3 years:sad:

Ovoids will and most certainly do fruit in the summer and fall, atleast here in Pennsylvania they do.They have also been growing in wooded and urban areas for years.

All the Ovoids I found today were drying and all but one had pieces that had been eaten by bugs. Another one I found had this white mold stuff growing on it. The mold seemed pretty aggressive, and I had seen it eating mushies in other areas of this patch previously. Makes me very worried for the continuation of this spot. I would say that they seem done here, but I actually noticed 2 rather large pins coming up. It seems this late in the season they are much more likely to be eaten by bugs or something else (mold) than people.

I think I'm going to try to check more landscaped areas next year. I have looked in basically every mulch/woodchip bed I see at any time/place, and the only time I saw them in landscaping was at a location where to rivers meet, so really it fit the "natural" habitat anyway. Maybe if I went out for hours looking in landscaping instead of woods while I'm actively hunting though might turn up different results.

When they are found in Summer and Fall, are their numbers are drastically smaller?

It's not hard to cultivate a patch.

My guess would be that ovoids only fruit in the fall in some of the milder climates. I'd imagine everything along the Ohio river gets too hot & dry during the summer, it does drop a ton in water level during the summer.

Yeah they tend to be not as great as spring finds but I've found some of my biggest flushes in June. For instance this was found 2 years ago in what i remember was about late June,

I usually find them in the grasses and from landscaped areas in the summer months, never checked thru riverside knotweed because they were so prolific in these areas. But my guess is that if there is enough rain and the temp doesn't go past 80 there is a good chance you can find them in the right habitat.

Blimey, there will be years here where they could almost grow right through till Winter then!  :plot:

Bro... that makes no sense whatsoever.. Just go to a decent sized river and check within 30 yards of the bank. Be sure to look in wood chip piles and piles of trees and sticks. Maples and box elders are always a good sign your in the right area.

thanks, i didnt know if there were certain regions the mushrooms are restricted to

It seems like everyone has given up on this season, so here's a small token of encouragement. I found the two of the left two hours ago and they were in pretty good condition, firm and unnibbled. And the official temperature at the airport today and yesterday was 98 and mid 90s for the three days before with no rain since Friday.

The level of bruising on those two is insane - they were a light tan when I picked them two hours ago.

The other dehydrated ones (I dehydrated them, they were like the fresh ones when picked) ones were the only decent picks from a 20 foot long, 8 inch diameter log that has been completely colonized by ovoids. There were dozens of ovoid corspes its enire length. The log, however, is in pretty bad shape and ovoid mycelium is literally the only thing holding it together - it's absolutely increadible!

I suspect that the log has been pretty much tapped of its nutrients. I took a chunk home and have contructed a "nursery" in a cool, shaded area that I can easily water. I steamed some maple "helicopters" and threw them down with the log mycelium, then added some shredded 1 inch diameter maple branches that I boiled to sterilize them. We'll see what happens.

My question to the forum is what to do with the rest of that log. I feel that I should take at least some of it and try to get some new patches going - my concern being that the log in its current situation is close to being tapped out. Any suggestions?

I've also considered the possibility of watering the site manually. It's just steps from the creek and the whole operation door to door would take 15 minutes max. Is there a chance it would fruit again if I kept it moist?

You can definitely help a wild patch by watering it. Check here for cultivation techniques. The wood is best when aged, not live or colonized by other fungi. Pasteurizing the substrate at temps between 160-170 will leave some beneficial bacteria that can fight off contamination.  You've got a :pm:

I should have noted that the wood was not live and had a small amount of surface mycelium on it already. That way I knew the wood was "ready" - and any living mycelium would be completely denatured by a long boil.

Damn, I love when shit works:

In less than 48 hours, right there in center frame is brand new mycelium growing from the harvested log onto a maple helicopter!

I was going through older posts and noticed Hygrocybe's picture of deer scat in his patch, and it struck me that in the half dozen locations I've found ovoids there have also been piles of deer shit closeby. Maybe it's just that deer like travelling through that low, dense vegitation or maybe the poop helps create the optimal habitat?

They probably benefit a small amount from the extra nitrogen but like he just said, it doesn't have anything to do with the poop. Deer and other animals go to gently sloping banks of creeks and rivers to drink. Just happens that those areas also promote wood loving fungi growth due to flooding.
