Advice on Inconsistent Colonization Rates - BRF Tek
    #14372147 - 04/29/11 11:15 AM (12 years, 10 months ago)

Following the BRF tek for the first time, mixed everything per instruction. inoculated.  Blah blah.

This was ~Feb. 25th or so.

1 jar colonized at the usual rate and has been sitting fully colonized for weeks,  it's now sprouting some shrooms inside the jar.

3 other jars have fully colonized a few weeks later.

2 Jars are about halfway colonized now.

2 jars took forever to start, and I actually thought I somehow forgot to inoculate them.

I didn't take the tape off the jars after inoculation, which I'm sure slowed them all down a bit.  But, why the inconsistent growth?  Inconsistent mixing of the BRF?  They're all stored in the same location, same light, same temp, same moisture.

Also,  when should I decide to fruit them?  Any problems with fruiting the 4 jars now.  And just adding the rest to the fruiting chamber as they come along?  My flushes and such will be out of sync but that's not a big problem right?

For the one that is already shooting some stems out.. should I pluck them before dunking and rolling?  Dunk and roll with them attached and just let 'em go?

Thanks in advance.

birth 'em a week after they've colonized 100%.

the one already fruiting, put in your fruiting chamber.  pick the tiny fruits off, dunk 'n roll.  it'll feel a little sacreligious plucking them before they get a chance to grow, but trust me it'll help encourage a more even pinset.

the rest of them? put 'em into the chamber as they have fully consolidated.

yeh, the flushes'll be staggered but that's not a bad thing.  think of it as the fact that you will always have a cake ready to harvest, for the most part.

So I dunked 'em all, left the little dwarf pin on it.  They're doing fine now, but that dwarf pin has become a "monster" pretty quick.  Funny thing is,  since it was stunted in the jar,  it grew upside down and rolled so when it opened the cap none of the spores fell out.  I think he'll make a fine first print.

Thanks for the advice guys.

FYI, spores are in tiny microscopic cannons and shoot out from between the gills at high speeds, if you see no black on the stem let it go a few more days till the cap flattens more. Some caps don't produce spores, but they will still be visible even if it is upside down when it is ready to release them.

As mentioned by k00laid and others, spores are very random...

If you want to have all of your jars colonize at roughly the same rate, you'll want to start isolating using agar.

I concur, sir.  Whether it's cloning or isolating a mushroom culture, agar skills will definitely be required.  Another, faster way to achieve a similar goal is by cloning.

I say similar because clones can have up to 10 different sub-strains of mycelium coming from them, sometimes more, that will need to be isolated down if your goal is to achieve a single sub-strain of mycelium.  Clones can also put forth single sub-strains of mycelium.  That's why I make several clones at once.  So that there can be a "cream of the crop" that can be selected by none other than yours truly.
