Bro you do NOT need THAT many cakes in your tub lol...
FIVE cakes for a QUARTER brick of coir? Usually for a 10 gallon tub I'll toss in like 2 or 3 and it colonizes just fine.

It MIGHT help with contams simply because there's MORE spawn so it consolidates faster, but you'd be AMAZED how fast 2 or 3 cakes can take over a tub. And if you make everything right, you won't have contaminants anyways!
A little goes a long way, think about how those tiny tiny spores managed to take over that big ol' jar.

Anyone else got opinions on the 2 extra holes being GE overkill? Nah you're good. If you start losing all the condensation on the sides of the tub, then plug the holes tighter with polyfill.
Or about trying to colonize half of a jar? I wouldn't waste my time with half a jar.
and mycelium water? too risky? Why not? Just do it. Experiment

Dude lol...i dont think you can be anything sterile with trying to take a wild print from outside. You cant take a spore print right when the veil breaks because it hasnt even developed spores yet. You gotta wait until the gills get their purpl/brwn colour then a spore print can be taken.

When a wild spore print is taken you cant be sterile...just as clean as possible(without disinfectants) and im pretty sure that it must be germinated on a dish of agar first so as soon as mycelium grows it can be isolated away into another agar dish and grown from there and away from the dirtyness of the first agar dish with wild spores from outside.

And yes you can do half of a pint jar to make it a 1/2pint but you would need a needle that goes below the dry verm layer. If the needle tip cant go below the dry verm then it cant be used. If any spore solution wets the dry verm layer on top then it will most likely start a contam.

And be careful when handling your cakes...if you jerk em too fast or accidently disturb the dry verm layer on top then it can let contams inside which can possibly penetrate the inside of the jar. And that wouldnt be too good.

Im not a pro  but im pretty sure that wild prints require agar dishes to isolate healthy mycelium away from the other dirty spores. Basically germinating the spore print in a agar dish, and cutting a healthy section of mycelium into another petri dish to get it away from the contam spores that are in the first dish.

At least i think thats how its done...wait for a trusted cultivator to tell you. I know indoor prints are easy. I took my first print in a jar and i landed the cap upside down  so i had to flip it cap side up and i used the boiling water tek for the syringe i used and did it in open air and it ended up being not so sterile.

I inocd 5 cakes with that syringe and 1/5 contamd with green at the very top and thats because i wet the dry verm layer, meaning the syringe was good i just need to stop doing open air inocs. The other 4 that went good are about to be birthed soon and are sooo stringy :naughty:

So indoor printing is easy.

No problem :super:

I spawned 1 brf cake to some coir/verm prepared using Damion5050's tek either last Saturday or a couple Saturdays ago lol i dont remember. I tried to cut the brick of coir in half and pasteurize it in half but it wasnt cutting  so i just did the whole brick per his tek to the T and i just measured out 2 cups of it to spawn my 1 cake to. It would take a jigsaw to cut that shit.

Im pretty sure you want the spawn ratio to be at least 1:4 spawn to substrate but i did 1:2 and spawned a 1/2pint cake to a pint of coir/verm. Its small but it was a tester so

Just jump right in bro. The best way to learn is by teaching yourself. Do your own thing and create your own techniques, go by what you feel. If you do this and continue to practice it you will become an amazing grower. It sounds like you have done your research. Keep logs and record everything. Constructive criticism is good too. :sunny: You did a great job with the tub. :sunny:

do not create your own techniques untill you feel you understand how it all works follow a gold standard tech then when you have success you can do yer own thing :2cents:

(For five 1/2 pint cakes I plan on using 1/4 brick of coir, 2cups verm, 1/2cup coffee, 4cups water. This comes out to ~4q of spawn/substrate mix in a 10x15" 10 gallon tub, you think that'll be thick enough?)

Coffee was always more trouble than it was worth for me. I never saw it help my yields versus straight coco. Also if the coffee clumps up at all you'll be asking for contams. That was one of my issues that it tended to clump.

Easiest grow in my experience 6qts spawn + 1 brick coco = 1 awesomeone mono.

No casing. No additives. No misting. Just a nice fan for a good breeze. 6 holes about 1 inch maybe a lil more stuffed with poly.

You can run the additives if you want. The verm will help hold some moisture in and i've used it before with good success.
