Quick NSW hunt, Inactives and ACTIVE Gyms.
    #14369639 - 04/28/11 09:18 PM (12 years, 9 months ago)

Hey guys, went to check out a new area today. No subs were found but there were plenty of inactives to keep me busy. ID's are not required but by all means if you feel up to the challenge, ID away. Will be venturing out with a friend this afternoon, hopefully the magic finds us again! :mushroom2::thumbup:

Here are some pics from todays hunt
1) Gymnopilus junonius

2)Geastrum pectinatum

3)Mycena sp.

4)No idea

5)No Idea

Ok now here is the interesting one, i think it is a Gymnopilus sp. The habitat was a cool damp mulch bed consisting of eucalyptus mulch with a covering of casurina needles. The specimens grew in clusters, some very dense and compact, others were more widely spread.
Gills are light orange and the spore print was a heavy rusty brown, they literally dropped spores on my hand as i picked them.
The stem was strong and fibrous with stronge purple bruising/colouring. Pins showed some blue/green bruising,stronger towards the base. pictures attatched.
Cap is orange with with small purple scales (much like junonius, except purple. Some specimens showed much stronger purple colouration.
These were picked in the illawarra, sout coast of nsw australia.
Here are some pics.

1) Small Patch

2) Gills

3) Pins

Thanks guys!! Let us know what you think. :mushroom2::mushroom2:

3) Parasola auricoma
4) maybe Leucoagaricus, was it really that yellow?
5) maybe Psathyrella or Tubaria, need macro pics of the underside
6) Gymnopilus purpuratus

Thanks Alan, yeah those yellow mushrooms were really vibrant, there were a few patches coming up, really interesting little guys.
In fact the whole area is exploding with mushrooms of all types at the moment. :dancer:
Is there any reports of G. purpuratus exhibiting activity in aus, i know most of our gymnopilus species have been concluded to not have active properties but there is definatley blue staining at the bases of the pins.
I would be stoked if these turned out to be actives!

G. purpuratus is active.  All green staining species of Gymnopilus are active.

Thanks psylo, the whole patch is really extensive, i could see atleast three hundred specimens where i was, and there are literally hundreds of pins popping up everywhere, the patch continued on but i was on a short timeframe, so im yet to fully ascertain the size.

Yeah they are growing directly out of woodchips, thats why i doubted if they were gyms at all. Lucky curiosity got the better of me!
And as for my own personal patch of magic gyms.... i think i could deal with that. :thumbup:

Also take lots of pictures, this is an interesting species!

Spore printing as we speak, i really noticed the green spots on a few of them, and some of the pins really do bruise up nicely. Some important info regarding the gyms, they seem to be fruiting exclusivley from palm mulch that was also present in patches among the eucalyptus substrate. Is G. purpuratus known to fruit from this substrate? I will return to the patch tomorrow and get more pics and a video.
Here are some more pictures from the patch, the camera died about halfway through the trip, but still got some cool photos, also got some more photos of the leucoagaricus/leucocoprinus that were requested, they are really awesome mushrooms. Is the yellow powder on the stems a distinguishing feature for this species as it was a very noticeable attribute.
Heres the pics

Gymnopilus Purpuratus

Heres one of the caps, notice the bruising.

Heres the leucoagaricus/leucocoprinus, these should clear it up. These are actually a seperate fruiting from the original finds, these were fruiting in the same area as the gyms, the colour seems to fade with age.

:awedance::awedance: WOW MAN :congrats::awesomenod:
Those are some kind of gym sp. FOR SURE AND that bruising is just TEASING you with possible activity:wink::thumbup::thumbup:
i didn't read thru the whole thread yet - your q/a's may be answered - - - - -but take around 150+wet grams ( per dose ) or 15 dry gr PER DOSE - chop up material - boil two cups of water on the stove in a pot for EACH dose - - - bring water to a slight boil - add chopped fungus - let cook for around 20 min and make sure to keep the heat as LOW as possible!!!- then you can let steep ( sit in the water) for another 20 min - and also add some honey and cinnimon to maek the taste WAY more pleasant - - - squeeze out each pot of juice into seperate containers or glasses - and make sure to SQUEEZE the fungi chunks of all they're goodies!!!

Let cool to your liking - and SLAM IT - - -  - - -:trippinballs::jamming:
They are VERY VERY mellow and relaxing  - no needs to worry about overdoing it - your gunna NEED alot to KNOW your feeling them!!!

Much Gym :mushroom2::heart: Feel free to hit me up with any questions man!!!

Super :congrats: on starting your first gym adventure:cheers:

Thank you heaps my man, they are drying in the dehydrator right now, they are so damn big and chunky, they take much longer then regular drying.
Im really interested in trying my first magic gyms, they have so many unique pschoactive chemicals. They are a beautifull organism. :mushroom2::mushroom2:
The tea tek you provided sounds delicious, i never thought that ingesting mushrooms could be an enjoyable experience!
If all goes well and the mushrooms are fully dried in time we should be dosing tonight. :dancer:
Thanks for all the help guys!!
Peace.

:cheers: Nice to hear man:thumbup::thumbup:
The tea is a MUST with the gyms - you could alsways just try n "choke" em down - but you literally will be choking or gagging them down - they taste like the definition of BITTER with undertones of earthy wood and mud -
But the simple tea with LOTS of honey and a couple heaps of cinnimon - its sooooooo smoooth it compliments the gyms trip PERFECTLY:headbanger:
You'll prob notice - they are mild - most of the time - and are a GREAT way to start a fungal adventure - just throw in a couple cube caps or woodlover caps - and your gunna be hella:trippinballs::biggrin:

Gyms are a weird texture too - very tough and thick - they take LOTS of time to air dry infront of fans - specially the giants

One more little tip - gyms are best taken for their majik when they are closer to the pubescent state - wait till your favs are just tearing the veil - and take som of those for fun and b sure n leave some big nasty oens to spread spores:thumbup::thumbup:

also gyms like if you cut caps off and take to new grounds:biggrin: making prints at home and making ghetto water bottles filled ( couple big prints can turn a whole gallon jug dark orange ) also works GREAT to naturally spread them to new areas - FOR ADDED YEARS N YEARS OF SUCCESSFUL HUNTING:awesomenod: ( or stalking:hehehe:)

Enjoy the time man!!! Your spot shud produce at least this one flush EVERY YEAR around this same exact time!!!! - weather permitting!!

Gym :mushroom2::heart:
Let us kno how the tea party goes:cheers:

Dosed the gyms with 3 friends last night, good times. I discovered That longboarding (the skatey kind) is a revelation. One of the highlights of my tripping experiences to date. One awesome effect was while sitting at the beach eating dinner, completley out of the blue balls of multicoloured light flew over my head for around ten seconds, filling the sky before disappearing over the horizon. Brilliant time had by all, enough tea was made for 3 people. Wisco the tea tek was beautifull, tasted just like pumpkin!
Hopefully I will be blessed with gyms again soon, I found a new patch today, not as large, but still sweet!!

This is an excellent active gym find, only I don't think they are G.purpuratus as the caps seem too large. G.purpuratus is usually also redder in color. This is most likely an undescribed species.
Be sure to take prints and/or keep some dried specimens.
