My first Mini-Mono tub *update* almost done-May 26 pics
    #14368788 - 04/28/11 06:57 PM (12 years, 9 months ago)

I figured I'd give these mini-mono's a go....  have a few colonizing...  this one is a 19L Sterilite;

spawned with 3 qts of Golden Teacher (on wheat berries), to coir/verm with a bit of coffee grounds and gypsum...  spawned it 7 days ago...  checked it just now, and this is what it looks like......

I had to dab up some water droplets with a paper towel...

Think I should fruit it??

Please don't dab uncolonized tubs.

How does it smell?

Then don't. It's that easy.

:whathesaid:

Also, did you notice that you have two small unblocked holes by the handles of the tub? I'd recommend cutting a hole in the lid & covering it w/ plastic wrap duct taped to the top of the lid. That way you can tell when it's fully colonized w/out exposing it to FAE. For next time. Don't do it now, lol

Thanks Doc_T...  shoulda went with my instincts...

@Todlow:  LoL!  thanks for pointing out those holes....  guess I missed them...  and I did have plastic wrap over the top, taped on...  but I removed it when I saw all of the water droplets on the surface...

guess I jumped the gun...

I just put the lid back on without the plastic wrap...  is that ok??

I meant a hole in the lid for light & viewport. I don't wrap my lids w/ plastic wrap & just cover the holes w/ duct tape. My lids are my GE spots for colonizing monos.

What type of tape is that covering your holes?

Also, I wouldn't recommend moving a colonizing tub until it's ready for fruiting. You'll cause the air to exchange too rapidly & CO2 levels will drop too low.

I had the wrap under the lid, so i could peek at it without giving it fresh air...
and the tape is a double layer of micropore tape..

oic...hmm. Next time, def. cut the hole in the lid before you spawn to bulk. It'll help a lot, I bet. I like my tubs to get some indirect light when colonizing.

IDK about micropore tape on a colonizing mono. Seems like it'd get wet from the condensation, which wouldn't be good.

hmmmm...  so duct tape is better??  i figured micropore would be ok for GE...  and a double layer wouldn't allow for too much...  moisture seems pretty good..  doesn't feel light at all...

Thanks for the advice...  think i should fruit it once the surface is totally covered?

yea, you're probably going to see pins soon though, as you introduced so much FAE & cleaned off the surface of water...evaporating water from the substrate is a huge pinning trigger. It happened to me on my first bulk run. I kept handling my tubs too much & caused early pinning due to too much AE

No need to dink around with tab.
Build the tub, pop the whole thing in a plastic bag. Don't seal it, just fold it over.

I saw it, just seems like taking the lid off would move the plastic wrap a bit, well at least more than just peeking in through the top.

I just don't feel colonizing bulk should be touched/jostled/moved at all. :2cents:

Like Doc_T said...5-7 probably. Should let it consolidate for 3 days...

I'd just let it sit for 6 then check it if you must. If not, let it go 7...it'll be good by then, for sure.

hey man,

so what size are those holes? 2 inch?

how many do you have and where? Looks like you have 4 on the surface of the sub, and 2 higher up on the sides?

They're 1 inch holes....  exactly right...  2 at sub level on long sides, and 2 up higher on the ends.

cool, cool.

so 1 inch is the reccomended hole size for mini-mono's then? any idea how that works compared to Doc's shotgun style mini mono? I like your idea better as ive had some success with big mono's and 2 inch holes.

I want to do some of these, as i have about 21 quarts with about 7 diff strains.

1-2" holes are fine for monos...it's all about the poly pack.

I use 1-1/8" holes w/ extremely loose poly w/ a fan on 24/7 & don't fan or mist & my tubs are fine.

Here's a closer look at the surface...

Question: what are these "myc balls" that I see here and there?  and..  are they normal, or an indicator of something lacking in the local environment?

You have a lot of water beaded up in there. I would fan it some. Should clear that water up and help with the myc balls too. They are normal.

Thanks..  I have been fanning 2-3 times/day..  have a fan blowing indirectly..    fan more maybe?  holes are 1" and are loosely stuffed with poly.

Sounds about right ... You want to fan anywhere from 2-5 times a day depending on how moist it gets in there and if you have a fan going or how tight your poly is. Mist whenever it gets dry. If anything, err on the dry side. It's easier to rehydrate then to dehydrate. Also you can let that water sit on there for a little bit. See if it gets soaked up. If not then fan it off.

Nope, you do it the other way around with tubs.
Mist less often, but really wet it down when it needs water.
The evaporation provides the humidity you need, you don't mist to create humidity in a tub.

curious to see how big they're going to get...  I seem to be prone to growing small fruits, with the odd medium-sized one popping up here and there..

Just took this pic a few minutes ago...

almost ready....  I'm kinda happy with my first mini-mono flush...  not bad at all...  can't wait to try a clone I took in a full-sized tub...

One thing...  I'm going fishing for 2 days..  think I should harvest this now, or wait til i get back??  I guess the worst case is that there'll be spores all over the surface...
...any thoughts??

if the veil is teared off you will have spore within 24 hours i think.

Edit: i don't see any veil teared off so i think you would be fine, it depends if you go fishing for 2 days or 3. and also how much time since pinning.

You buy furniture.  You tell yourself, this is the last sofa I will ever need in my life.  Buy the sofa, then for a couple years you're satisfied that no matter what goes wrong, at least you've got your sofa issue handled.  Then the right set of dishes.  Then the perfect bed.  The drapes.  The rug.  Then you're trapped in your lovely nest, and the things you used to own, now they own you.  Chuck Palahniuk
