Hordes of flies have taken my deck away from me
    #14368769 - 04/28/11 06:54 PM (12 years, 9 months ago)

Recently moved to a new area not too far from where I previously lived, but am having a big problem with various flying insects.  Mostly flies, maybe fruit flies or some other very small species.  I can't go outside for more than a few moments before they start swarming.  The property is wooded and I don't believe anyone lived here for a couple of years before I moved here.  Anyone have any idea's as to how I may be able to get control over these little f'ers?  I have spent some time removing heavy leaf coverage from around the house and under the deck, but, as I said, I live in the woods and there are leaves everywhere.

Try hanging clear plastic baggies filled with water around the perimeter. It's an old Carribbean trick that seems to work here in So. Fla.

And are you sure there are no decaying animal carcases near your deck? (not to be gross or to imply that you haven't worked hard to clean up the property!)

That is absolutely a valid statement and I feel as if I have combed this property well enough to say that there are no dead animals.  There are a bunch of old logs that were once used as decoration but are now rotting away, I wonder if they could be part of the problem?

May just be a shortlived natural hatch, like mayflies.  Sometimes they only last for a few days when the weather turns warm and then disappear.  Wait a little while and see if they don't just go away.

Mythbusters tested the water filled plastic bag trick. If anything more flies ended up where the bags were (perhaps a different specie of fly ?). As already mentioned have you looked under the deck ? Did the last person who lived there have odd hobbies and people disappeared from time to time ?

Here in the summer legends are made about our mosquitos, we leash them like dogs and save fuel, they fly us around... etc etc. We broke down a couple years ago and bought a good netted tent thing for the deck. Has a piece in the centre for a small fireplace and everything. Makes sitting down late in the evening with smoke and choice booze very enjoyable. Cost 140 bucks, lasted a couple years now, worth every penny for not having annoying buzzing in your ears.

I was going to suggest this myself, it works pretty well

We use the plastic bags as well at my place, central tx, and they seem to work.
