I love applied math. Pure mathematics for the sake of mathematics just doesn't make sense to me.
-------------------- Did he dream about dragons? Did he dream about deer? Did he whisper he names of friends who were near? What songs did they play, and how far away? Why did he whisper, why did she scream? What does the sound of a screen door mean? Who talks on the hill? Who goes to the cellar, can you feel the chill? Where does the river, when will the wind? How far are the mountains? Where do they end? Why would the church? Did the service begin? Tell me who died, and tell me who cried. Help me hide in the skin of a deer, my zippered-up bag in the mouth of a stag so swiftly I go through rows of does, it flows, it flows, it flows, it flows all over the hill where the green grass grows.

I don't think it can be done analytically. It could be done numerically though.

It's mental masturbation. As content-free as a tone poem.
But every now and then, some bit of pure math turns out to be good for something IRL. Imaginary numbers, for example. You really couldn't do electrical engineering without them.

Our number system is based on 10.
We have ten fingers.
That works out nicely.
Surely just coincidental.

ya because the integral can't be defined with just regular numbers and operations

Fluid dynamics is what really made me appreciate math. Up until that point it was all just really intense versions of trig (civil engineering). I never really understood the beauty of calculus and differential equations until fluids.

The same equation that applies to the toothpaste I mentioned earlier applies to the oceans:

This is conservation of mass. When the moon pulls on the ocean, it gets shallower 90 degrees away. Then 180 degrees away it has to get deeper again. Think of the ocean as an oval, and Earth is a circle inside the oval.
The atmosphere has tides too.

Jesus...I just got a book on linear algebra, trying to learn more about the geometry of spaces & manifolds. You might want to check out The Road to Reality. I'm chewing through it now. It's a physics book, but it's the most math-heavy book I've read that wasn't a text book
