After 2 NICE flushes of APE...(and moving on to rye)
#14368364 - 04/28/11 05:43 PM (12 years, 9 months ago) |

... I am sitting here looking at almost 1/4 oz of dry APE...
...aborts.
I am curious, aroused and frightened at the same time.
Thoughts?
In other news, I am taking my first steps into the world of rye. After many many nice brf runs, I think it's time I started. Still loving my brf though, and a good pc and lc makes full pint wide mouths a snap.
Rye is for the monos I want to make out of some of my current SGs. I am keeping it simple, soak and simmer with a touch of gypsum. Fancy mixes for later when I know what I am doing with rye.
I have a feeling my rye jars may be drying out. Or I am paranoid. Either way, I gotta work on that...
Good new is the LC is starting to fuzz up in the first rye jars. I shot them up 3 days ago, so that's right on time.
Wish me luck!

Not quite like those, Anonjon.
Most of mine are just caps that started and gave out, the size of blueberries. You could eat a dozen in a bite.

Cell phone pics suck, but at least you can see some of the berries...

When they dried, they went Navy blue. Beautiful.
APE is fascinating to watch.

are the APE as slow colonizing as the original PE is supposed to be? im pretty interested in this specific strain... would be nice to know before i shoot up another 50 jars and it take forever. id rather do a smaller batch is thats the case.

Haha, wait, no... I've not eaten any yet. Larf.
2 grams will go down the hatch tomorrow to see what I am dealing with. I just wanted to see what folks had to say about ape aborts. Sure, we all read "they are potent", but it's always better to hear "Dude, this one time...."
I am thinking tea or maybe some type of shroomshine made out of these for an event in a couple weeks. I've done this many times with regular cubes and wild galindoii and such but not ape aborts, so I need a sense of the gram/trip level ratio.

Yep, APE is pretty darn slow. I had pins by 6-7 weeks invitro. Some jars took longer to pin than others, so birthing time was not the same for the whole batch. I highly recommend tyvek'ed lids. Better contam resistance in the long run, and less moisture loss. Both very important factors in APE grows.

You are wise bro. PE is amazing. It also about did me in, and I ate less than three grams. (2.8) FUCK! FUCK! FUCK!
I didn't time it right. It was amazing too, but I will not do that again.
Congrats!

This one time, I didn't have any PE because no one ever has any spores. Sorry bros, but that's as good as the story gets. If you ever want to get rid of a print/swab of that APE, you let the ole' cappy know. I'll put you in the sugar list.

Nice replies folks, thanks! Yeh Anon, those berries just FEEL and smell powerful. There were some spots on just about every cake that I had to SCRAPE them off with a sterile spoon after picking off the big'uns.
This has happened 3 times now, 4th flush starting on some of the cakes, 3rd for the rest. Before I even harvest one flush, tons of caps pop up for the next one. Most cakes are bumpy all over with pins before I even dunk, and afterwards I have to choose a side with the fewest pins to set them on. Oh, the shroomanity...
In sad news, I've lost 2 ape cakes to trich.
4th flush for them, so I'm not terribly disappointed, but rather am humbled to know I still have work to do. I have yet to get the perfect environment for apes, it seems. I think I was over-misting trying to compensate for way more fanning. I could probably use more frequent h2ho2 treatments of the perlite and mister as well.
And a bigger FC to hold HR better while I'm away and on auto-fanning. I have too many little ones, I need BIG... and I'm looking at 10 jars of PFC and 10 jars of Maz colonizing, rye and my special brf, respectively. Some of the small SGs will become monos for the rye jars, so that's a new path for me to try...
Any other thoughts on ape longevity/ape tips in general?
I did a little write-up of my first ape trip here: http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/14266559
It was 5 small dry apes, lemon-tek'd. I thought, ok, I'll get a good buzz and see what's up with these...
Wrong.
This was as good if not a bit better than most full 8th reg cubie trips I've had. A hard come-up was a bit unsettling, but fun. The come-down was smooth and fairly short. I slept like a baby, which is sometimes difficult if the come-down is too long.

I am having a bitch of a time getting spores onto swabs. So far, I don't think any of the caps I've tried have been spore-bearing. I seriously think I need a high-powered monocle to find caps with spores. As of now, I'm just shooting in the dark, and agaring-out nothing except the occasional bacteria...

Ah, Cali.... I grew up there, mostly. The memories.
12 years old: We duct-taped the bully of the neighborhood inside a port-a-potty that was on a construction site along the 110 freeway by the LA river. Near Eagle Rock/Highland park, if you know the area. Shoved his ass down the bank and crashed that big plastic box of stink at the bottom of the river.
I never ran so fast in my life.
Anyhoo, sorry about no-spore-cali. Next time I fly out there I will smuggle some lc up my ass for you. Yeh, I'm hardcore like that. *pwned.*
In other ape-news, the clones I took are doing great and almost done eating up the mini-brf/malt/verm cake I made for them. Those will be sliced up into 8ths and used as g2g starters.
I made shroomshine out of most of the ape aborts yesterday. 8 others drinking with me.
Very interesting to see 8 totally different trips while having my own. People we coming up at all different times, some were just in nonverbal joy land, some wanted to talk about everything all night... an absolute blast. Talking to everyone was like going into a room that was them and looking around in them like going through a museum.

Yeah, I know where that area is. There are some cool spots out there. I'm around Santa Monica/Brentwood. From Northern California, originally. Where are you, now?
That's a good story about the bully, too. Sucks that they didn't have youtube back then. I'm holding you to your word on that LC, so don't let me down. Just don't try and put the finger gripper part of the syringe in all at once, start from an angle.
