I think it's more humbling than depressing.

There's one good pic that exemplifies controlled folly.
Quote:
“I am happy that you finally asked me about my controlled folly after so many years, and yet it wouldn’t have mattered to me in the least if you had never asked. Yet I have chosen to feel happy, as if I cared, that you asked, as if it would matter that I care. That is controlled folly!”

You guys are tools when you say that. Oh the universe is huge so humanity doesn't mean anything at all? Psshhh whatever.
Id say were all pretty significant. I believe were all here for a reason tho even if I don't believe the bible thumpers.
Every one of you are special imo. Some of you are special ed, but special none the less. We are the universe trying to figure itself out and you think that's nothing special?

Why am I here and not there?
Should I be over there or over here?
Well if I go over there, should I be there when I get there, or should I be here when I'm there??

Plus where else in the entire universe are you going to find the things we have here? We are very significant. Only insignificant in size.

Acting like you really have some kind of legitimate insight into the universe is pretty fucking stupid in my opinion. You're probably right, but thinking that you know that you're right is very egotistical. We are pretty unintelligent at this point, but with the exponential growth we are seeing and have seen in our technologies and specifically computing technology (artificial intelligence), I think we will have a much better understanding of our capabilities and place in the universe in the coming decades and centuries.

"he who saves one life, saves the world entirely."
I did that, several times, here on the Shroomery. My latest postive case of that happening was being important part of an admin team effort to prevent an acutely suicidal underage member from committing suicide by contacting his father who then got professional help in motion which succeeded in preventing a very likely successful suicide on the planned date.
We are NOT insignificant.
Our bodies, our minds, every second of our lives is the direct consequence of a few stars exploding billions of years ago, and the laws of the universe playing with the ashes.
The entire universe conspired to get you right here, right now. When your time is up the entire universe will conspire on your demise.
Positively tiny? Yes we are. But so is the Local Group. One step back, so is the Virgo Supercluster. And a hydrogen atom.
But tiny by no means means insignificance. If there is no God, there is no significance but the significance we make, so we are highly significant. If there is a God, we're pretty darn significant too.
Don't let the vastness of the Universe fill you with despair, let it fill you with awe, be it scientific or spiritual.

Nice post.
The vastness of the Universe is merely a metaphor for the infinite potential of our minds:
"Our psyche is set up in accord with the structure of the Universe, and what happens in the macrocosm likewise happens in the infinitesimal and most subjective reaches of the psyche. For that reason the God-image is always a projection of the inner experience of a powerful vis-a-vis (face to face)."
