I was wondering if anyone could shed some light on their method of dealing with contaminated sawdust bags. I have my first green mold infected shiitake bag and I don't even want to open it.
Thanks for any help.

You can bury it deep enough that it won't affect anything on the surface, or if you're feeling earth-hatey you can just burn it

Molds are everywhere, just put it outside and see what happens to it. You don't have to treat it like radioactive waste.

Sometimes I pasteurize all my contaminated bags before dumping, sometimes I don't. Haven't seen a difference yet.

Use trich to enrich potting soil. It has beneficial properties for soil. bury it and mix it in with shovel and some water.
Don't get it near any equipment, hay, or other stuff, also wet it down before opening it to avoid trich plumes..
Also if there is anything other than trich or aspergillis consider just tossing it. purples, reds, and pinks are hazardous waste to me. Just toss it or autoclave it first and then toss or burn it if you can but I'd just toss it.

Just compost it. Like said above mold is ubiquitous. In a compost heap any mold or bacteria will quickly find its advantage gone.

I toss anything contaminated. The $1 I'm saving isn't worth getting sick over or the work it takes to clean the bags *at all*.
I did however just save a few cobweb bags (the bags themselves) and a half dozen jars that had been contaminated by bacteria.

No, just that there's always a time for exceptions.

Wow I can't imagine throwing away a jar just because the contents are contaminated. Seems like a huge waste. If you're that paranoid just PC the jars before opening them. Dumping the contents and giving the jars a wash takes little work.

I bury them into the garden areas, or anywhere the ground has been disturbed and in need of repair. Of course, over the winter when the ground is frozen they pile up several feet deep. Here's one of four pickup loads of spent/contaminated substrates that just got spread around. RR
