Teens fail to grasp impact of drugs
    #14364082 - 04/27/11 10:26 PM (12 years, 9 months ago)

http://www.newspressnow.com/localnews/27697480/detail.html

Special to the News-Press The effects that drugs have on teens vary from person to person, said a school health official. F. Eileen Duty, coordinator of health services for the St. Joseph School District, said that students who become involved in drugs also run the risk of other health problems, plus the lack of inhibition that can lead to academic or social problems.

A health educator for 27 years, Mrs. Duty said teens can easily fall into a “pattern” of bad behavior. Most teens are exposed to drugs through older kids, parents, friends and the street, she said.

There are many drugs that are affecting young people and their community, but the most commonly used drug by teens is marijuana. Many teens may do this drug to impress their friends or maybe even release stress, but they fall short in understanding the dangers of using this drug.

Christy Miller of the St. Joseph Youth Alliance knows from personal experience the damage that drug use can cause. She said her sister’s path to meth use was a slow and damaging process. The drug abuse not only affected the user but also the people who loved her.

“I wasn’t praying that I would wake up, I would pray that she would wake up,” Ms. Miller said. She watched her sister’s behavior and she knew that the things she did were not what she would normally do.

For example, she slept for days at a time and had an odor.

Ms. Miller, who had worked with drug abusers previously, knew the signs and effects of using this particular drug.

“I was never ashamed of her, I was ashamed of what she was doing,” she said.

National statistics support her belief that drugs have a harmful effect on young people. Studies have found that teens who drink are 50 times more likely to use cocaine than teens who never consume alcohol. In addition, said one study, more than 60 percent of teens said that drugs were sold, used or kept at their school.

The Missouri Division of Alcohol and Drug Abuse cites the dangers of using marijuana. The dangers include breathing difficulty and increased heart rate. It also affects the cardiovascular system.

Not only does marijuana affect the body, it affects the mind. When consuming this drug, a person may begin hallucinating. This drug impacts the coordination and changes the behavior of a teen. Mrs. Duty said education remains the key to discouraging young people from drug use. This includes not only educating teens but adults.

In terms of prescription drugs, many young people get those from the home as opposed to on the street, she said.

That should be 100%, some kids just don't know what is going on.

May i suggest a movie called 'Human Traffic'. It sums out society in 2 hours. These authoritarian figures are patronizing and looking down on kids in todays society because of the evil droogzz. They don't realize the work load teens have today in society. being subjected to to advertisement, political and capitalist corruption, studying at school hours a day so they can get that 9-5 job they always wanted. How about these politicians stop worrying about their fucking drug use, which is helping these teens release stress, stop spreading outrageous propaganda that isn't going to fool anyone but the complete ignorant. Fucking waste of my tax money. Scum

What a novel idea? Do you think people actually use it because it makes them feel good? I mean I know EVERYONE does it to impress their friends (and hey, who isn't impressed by a pot smoker, right?) but this new theory sounds like it may have a small amount of credibility.

'Cause that makes sense. I wonder if the people who write these will ever know how :tard: they are.

I often find myself confusing oncoming car headlights for pots of gold under the influence of Marijuana. Why can't people see the dangers of reefer madness?

LOL my dad told me the hallucinating thing when he caught me smoking pot. Told me it was a hallucinogen and i was in danger of hurting myself due to the hallucinogenic nature of the drug. The sad thing is he actually smoked pot back in the day so he should know better than that.
