I would not bother making layer much thicker than 1 inch.. at the most.

If using cakes or whole grain as substrate, a depth of a few inches is best for maximum yields. If using bulk substates such as straw or compost the maximum depth should be about 6 inches (1 1/2" casing).

I doubt you'd need 12 qrts for one tub, maybe 3-4 tops. Save some jars and make a few tubes, better play the odds.
