    #14363605 - 04/27/11 09:09 PM (12 years, 9 months ago)

i'm dealing with some WBS quart jars, and they are clumping up terribly...i was beating on one for ten minutes, and my hand is sore as hell, and it didn't even break up the clump i was trying to..their has got to be an easier way..any advice, or am i doomed to having sore hands/wrists lol?

have you watched the RR vidz?

Bike tire

phonebook

roll of tape

arm of chair/couch

why do you want to break up the grain?

dont be shaking those jars too much. You only want to do it once at 20% then once they are done when you are spawning.

What % of colonization are these at? 20% or so? If so, then shaking definitely helps. Beat it on a big phone book, which is probably all phone books are good for these days minus a monitor stand.

Next time, use some gypsum during your soak/simmer step. It helps prevent clumping, even after partial colonization.

Only shake at 20-30% and only shake once.

If you are having a hard time shaking/breaking it apart then I cant see it being 20-30%

I could see it being 100%, what percent colonized is your grain jar?

It costs the mycelium energy (read: their food supply i.e. grain) to re-knit and recolonize each time you shake. 20% is safe because there's plenty of nutrition left. If you shake them over and over every few days they'll spend too much energy reknitting and possibly burn up a lot of h2o in the process. At least, I think that's the popular reason for not over-shaking.

Once at 20%, maybe once at 80% and you're done. That's all the shaking you should need to do if all your conditions are right. Alot of people do that second shake at 80% to get the straggler sections that may take much longer to colonize on their own. If you get your "swirl shake" technique down you can probably skip the 80% shake...but it's usually just luck.

imagine getting beat up then once you were starting to feel better you get your ass kicked again...
after a couple of these you wouldn't even have the energy to procreate...

use that analogy for mushrooms...

How far along is the jar in question and how often are you shaking?
