Jars smell
    #14363276 - 04/27/11 08:04 PM (12 years, 10 months ago)

My jars have been colonizing for 2-3 weeks now, and there is no visible sign of mycelium. I had hoped this was because they were kept at a slightly lower temp and were going slowly, and maybe all the mycelium was at the center of the jar. I just noticed a very faint odor from them, kind of like a combination of feet and slightly old milk. It is very faint, but there.

As I'm typing this, I'm realizing that I probably messed up somewhere.... Any chance this is normal...?

The smell is bad, you'll need to PC the jars, and probably start over.

However, this is what you need to make sure your doing:

PF tek:
follow Tek to the "T"! PC @ 15psi for at least 45 mins, or steam bath for 90 mins
Inoculate 1cc per 1/2 pint, 2cc per pint (MS), or if using LC 2cc 1/2 pint, 4cc pint.
When inoculating the substrate, make sure the spores/myc are as close to the sides as possible so you can see the growth when it starts.

Grains:
-Soak grains 4-24 hours
-simmer for 10-20 mins
-strain and rinse off (I like my grain spawn wetter, so I dont let my spawn dry, it goes right into the jars)
-I load my jars up to 3/4-4/5 full (I don't do g2g, just lots of lc! :bigjoint:)
-PC grain 90 mins (I've gotten away with 60 mins, but thats not good practice)
-I only use LC for my grain jars, 5 cc per qt, 4 cc/pint, and 2-3 cc for a 1/2 pint
-After inoculation, I shake the hell out of the grain jars in every direction possibly for a good 2-4 mins! That is key as you get the LC everywhere and it starts to grow everywhere as well. This is my favorite way of doing everything as I can have a perfect grain spawn ready in 1-2 weeks after inoculation!

Hope that helps!

I have FINALLY written up a couple teks as to how SHP has done things in the past. DISCLAIMER: This is not for the newbie to mycology, and not going to work for everyone! This is simply what works for one person when other teks and methods have failed miserably!

~~~~~SHP's highly disputed method of doing ALL their work outside of a flow hood or a Still air box!~~~~~
bacterial contamination. Which is the most likely reason for no growth.
First of make sure your spore syringe is from a good vendor (any one of the shroomery sponsors)
Bacterial contamination can come from non sterile inoculation (failing to flame sterilise the needle before each jar) incomplete sterilisation.
