Cleaning stored HEPA for flowhood
    #14362265 - 04/27/11 04:55 PM (12 years, 9 months ago)

I built a flowhood some years ago and used it a few times with excellent success. I have since moved and stored it for over a year in my garage. I am concerned that it may have accumulated dust containing mold and bacteria. Since it is has very deep areas to accumulate these things (standard commercial HEPA filter from field and forest) I am wondering what would be the best way to (at the very least) ensure that as much of any spores or bacteria are not viable.
The filter;
Maybe some good old light bleach solution misted into the filter or lysol? I have had it running for a few hours now, hoping that this will force out most of the uglies. I would just buy a new one, but I don't have a couple hundred bucks to spare. I was lucky to be able to send an envelope (containing a trade). lol

I am by no means a professional but in my opinion I would:
-Make sure you install a fresh new pre-filter
-Spray the front of your hood down with oust,lysol, etc.
-Let it run for an hour or so

At this point you could say pour a sleeve of petri dish's and you will
find out within a day or two if the filter is compromised or pushing
dirty air through. I would think it would be fine, but it would not
hurt to double check with some agar plates.
