Why does sanitation matter?
    #14361973 - 04/27/11 04:11 PM (12 years, 9 months ago)

If shrooms grow in the wild in cow shit, why is sanitation such a big deal? Don't the shrooms grow in worse conditions in the elements out in the wild?

There's also beneficial bacteria that live in rhizomorphic structures to combat bacteria harmful to the mushrooms. Indoors, molds are some of your biggest enemies which still attack wild mushrooms, and colonized dung is most often sun-bleached and decayed to the point that certain bacteria just can't inhabit it anymore

So the fact that wild shrooms growing on cow shit basically means that you have nothing to worry about if you accidentally ingest cow shit because it's basically "sun bleached" like you stated? Wow, I was always scared of getting shrooms that have possibly been grown on cow shit. lol.

I think the biggest difference is that in the wild, the fields aren't just overflowing with huge mushrooms like you'd want in a controlled growing situation. Mycelium isn't so weak as to be defeated by every contam, but it doesn't win every time, either.

Really, it just comes down to statistics. You could probably grow mushrooms without any sort of sterilization whatsoever, but you might only get a few jars to fruit out of a hundred or so.
