Buying Silver
    #14361948 - 04/27/11 04:05 PM (12 years, 10 months ago)

I'm looking to buy some small amounts of silver with some extra cash that I would waste anyways.

My question is should I buy either:

1 oz APMEX Silver Bar .999 Fine
or
Silver - Bullion .999 pure - Heraeus Bar (1.000 oz.)

What is the difference in these?

Either one will work. Silver is silver. I like junk personally, but generic bullion is fine too. Just make sure they are marked .999 fine silver (both of those are).

If you think in the long run silver will still go up you can get a deal this week probably.  As of now in pre market trading silver is down 12%

I think most likely just because its been going pretty much straight up this month - can't continue like that forever.

I may buy some too if the dip is low enough

Small bars often have a higher premium.  I like to go for 1 oz coins, silver quarters, dimes, halfs, etc.

Or if i have enough 10 oz+ bars have an even lower premium.

I like to buy silver jewelery and can get silver way under spot, but jewelery isn't as liquid, and there is a lot of fake silver out there so it takes an eye, and preferably an acid test.

I was surprised to see the dip under 40. I just went on Ebay and placed a bid on a roll of Franklins.

Silver Margins rose for second time within a week

CME Group announced that it will raise the margin requirements on silver trading. This announcement comes after CME already announced of a margin increase during last week. Due to the recent announcement, the minimum amount will be needed to deposit will be 16,200$ per contract, an increase of 11.6% from the pervious amount needed.

The margins on silver contracts rose very rapidly during the year along with the rise in silver. Only a year earlier the margin on silver contracts stood at 4,250$ per contract.

This change not only immediately affected silver prices as we currently see them plunge, but also might have some effects in stabilizing this commodity's price in the long term.

This change affected as seen in the chart above on the gold to silver ratio during last week.

Does anyone know any decent dealers in Canada selling silver right now without huge markup? Or any dealers in the States that ship to Canada without a large minimum order?

Ive already started buying silver coins, my collections is growing. I see that when the US dollar falls (the Australian dollar is already higher), the Australian dollar will follow and become worthless too.

Love the shiney silver coins. :gameover:

So, is there a better/best/worst place to buy silver? I'm finally employed and have some money to invest. Any help is appreciated.
