How the hell do I mist?!
    #14359480 - 04/27/11 03:39 AM (12 years, 10 months ago)

I've kept searching and tried to avoid posting this, but here goes:

I've got no idea how heavily to mist my cakes/casings, and I think it's my biggest fruiting issue at the moment.

I have a fine trigger-mister and a pressurised sprayer.  Most recently (after a poor first grow which may have been due to excessive moisture) I've been using the trigger-mister to apply mist a couple feet up that sprays lightly onto the vermed cakes until I see the first hint of glistening on the mycelium, which takes very little.  It's usually visually gone within an hour or two in an SGFC.

My latest cakes have been in the SGFC for two and a half weeks; one cake produced two aborts about the size of peas, one cake has has a few pins on it for the last few days, and the rest just have little tentacles of mycelium reaching out towards the fresh air from the walls that have been refusing to pin for two weeks.  Temps are 62-70, but even so, I think something should have happened by now.

Can anyone please explain, or show in photos, what an over/under/correctly-misted surface looks like?

You mist to replace the moisture that evaporates off the cake.  If you pick up the cake and can tell from the weight that it's dry, dunk it.  Misting should be done a few times daily.  Make sure the overspray covers the perlite.

Your temps are low.  Raise to the mid 70s.

Cheers RR.  I've been dribbling water over the vermiculite in the dent in the top of each cake, keeping it quite moist, like in your video (IIRC).

I've been avoiding touching the cakes, though I'll give it a shot and see if they're drying out (though they shouldn't be, as the dent has given them a constant supply of water, I'd assume.

But coming back to the main question, do I mist until I see water (as distinct from tiny mist droplets) on the surface of the cake, or is the "light" misting I've been giving sufficient? (3x daily)

Also, what's the best way of raising the temperature?  Stick a lamp right up close to the top side?

You don't want to raise your temp over 75-78F, if you do you make conditions more ideal for contams to take hold. I use 15 watt 6500k CFL and it raises the temp a couple degrees. The higher the wattage on the light the more heat it will produce. My 26 watt bulb got wayy too hot.

That's a brilliant setup my friend...is that a pint jar you're using to prevent moisture from accessing the light? Or a 1/2 pint?

And why not simply use a clear cover to allow natural light in?

Sorry to hijack the thread...

the amount of light that reaches the substrate decreases by the square of the distance.

Quart in the step by step pics and a smaller watt bulb and a half pint in the FC pics. I think they like the heat, I will probably have to switch back to the window when it gets warmer.

Cheers enigma, I've got a similar setup with a 35W HID, sitting in a jar on top of the SGFC (as I was worried putting it inside would either heat it too much, or weaken the plastic that was holding it (the lid of the coffee jar cracked/melted after a week of 12/12.

I might drop the bulb in naked, just hanging halfway off the pearlite, but...

How the hell do I mist?! :P

Don't put your bulb in there, that could give you quite a shock when you see how condensated the cord is!
All you need is a weather resistant socket for $3 and a night light repair set for less than $5, a drill and a 11/2 inch hole saw for the drill. You drill the hole as close as you can get to the middle of the wide mouth pint jar lid twist the wires together on the light socket and the cord, tape shrink wrap or put wire nuts on the twisted wires.(i suggest just tape or wire butt connectors that you crimp first then tape or shrinkwrap over the connector) It's AC so you can hook wires up either way, doesn't matter, just don't plug it in until the last step. :onfire: You get you a 13-15 watt 6500k CFL bulb, slide the lid and ring down the cord pop the rubber light socket in the hole , screw in the lightbulb, and then screw on the lid. Bam water resistant CFL!

If the light socket doesn't fit snug you can glue or tape it to it. I also like to drill holes in the lid around the socket to let heat escape.

Also to make the hole in the lid colored tubs are much softer plastic than clear ones so the hole is easier to cut. You just put a jar thread side down as close to the middle as you can and trace around the rim that is touching the lid with a pencil or sharpie. The next part you have to be very careful, you score around the inside of the line 2-3 times and then plunge knife/razor through gently and cut out a piece to make it easier to get the rest out. Carefully cut around the circle, trim it up and slide in your jar.

Here are the things you need:  http://www.homedepot.com/h_d1/N-5yc1v/R-100356874/h_d2/ProductDisplay?langId=-1&storeId=10051&catalogId=10053

You can find one of these cheaper at home depot or somewhere else locally like harbor freight.

A drill

1 wide mouth pint jar with lid and ring

And a 13-15 watt 6500k CFL
http://1000bulbs.com/product/58665/FC13-S65ET.html

You want to only mist when the previous mist is dry in spots or almost dry, you want to mist up into the air the finest mist possible(high pressure sprayer in the hair aisle at walmart), if your sprayer won't do a fine mist you should get a better one, you spray a fine mist over the tote about a foot or two away a few sprays at a time looking at the sub's surface after every few mists until the whole top of the sub is covered in tiny tiny drops like dew on a spider's web, and then you want to fan afterwards to evaporate some of the drops to help trigger pinning and GE. You should only need to mist a mono once or twice a day, if you are doing cakes in a SGFC then you might need to mist 3 times because of all the airflow drying out your cakes. Just look at it to see if it looks wet morn noon and night and see if it looks like it needs a few mists? :awesomenod::thumbup::mushroomgrow::goodluck:

P.S. You will have to make something or find a piece of cardboard to fan with if you glue or tape the light jar to the lid so cut the hole small in the tote lid and the jar will just pop in and out because of the flexibility of the solid color lid.
