Cannabis and Sleep Apnea

First a little bit of back story...
For most of my teenage years my dad has suffered from insomnia. About a year ago a doctor diagnosed him with sleep apnea. He now uses a CPAP machine when he sleeps. He says it helps some, but he still isn't getting good sleep.
I have searched online about using cannabis to help alleviate the apnea, but the only discussion topics I have seen quickly get bogged down with people arguing whether or not it should be legal.
Do any of you have any experience with trying cannabis to alleviate sleep apnea? How did it affect the issue?
Also, if you could provide some good links with more information, that would be great.
Edit: If I remember correctly it is central apnea not obstructive.

Well, weed is great for insomnia most times, but I dunno about Apnea. Proceed cautiously.

i could only find one study which was in 2002 it was only studied in rats though
Quote:
A study led by researchers the University of Illinois at the Center for Sleep and Ventilator Disorders was conducted to observe the effect of THC on sleep, respiratory pattern, and sleep apnea in rats. The study was conducted on 11 rats who expressed sleep apnea. The rats were injected with various doses of THC, oleamide, and serotonin, alone and in combination. The data showed that THC and oleamide stabilized respiration during all sleep stages. The oleamide and THC would inhibit serotonin induced sleep apnea. The researchers concluded that cannabinoids can suppress sleep apnea and are extremely important to contributing to pharmacological research for treatment of sleep related breathing disorders.

I also found that study, but couldn't find any other info on the topic. I have read a few reports of people getting relief of symptoms from using medical marijuana, but there are very few, and I don't want to jump to conclusions.
