I'm certainly no believer, but honestly the idea that everything sort of spontaneously appeared out of nothing sounds just as absurd as the idea there is some all powerful being that created this world. Certainly religions have some weird quirky shit that was obviously invented by man, but how do we not know that the Christian God does actually exist? If he was to pass his word down to man literally thousands of years ago and it was carried on by word of mouth and some of it written, of course there is going to be many pieces that get misinterpreted, mistranslated, lost, or even intentionally changed for ones own benefit.
Just my two cents.

How the hell does linking Dr. Emoto make me a "True Believer"?
So you linked it because you know Emoto is a bullshitter? Is that it?
that's just his pejorative phrase for something he doesn't understand
I don't understand how it is demonstrably bullshit that taping words to frozen water bottles causes magical ice crystals?
Well, alright then.

oh don't get me wrong, that is bullshit. What's also bullshit is to somehow connect that to all other spiritual beliefs on this forum like a reductionist poopface.

Who is claiming that 'everything sort of spontaneously appeared out of nothing'? I see no such claim anywhere in this thread.
The only time I ever see such a claim is believers mis-characterizing the big bang theory in an attempt to prove a point.

Yeah, it's kinda like True Believers claiming that evolution is a flawed theory because dogs don't give birth to cats.

Probably wasn't the best way to put it, but what I'm getting at is that no matter how you try and explain the origins of the universe it's going to sound somewhat fantastical

nobody on this forum is saying that. nobody. i'm so down with evolution, have been my whole fuckin life. in fact i'm down with 100% of modern science. The only way you can argue is to lump all people into this "true believer" category that only exists in your own mind.

I was addressing the claim that "everything sort of spontaneously appeared out of nothing" is no stranger than everything was created by god, which is a staple of the mystic-head debate.
The first is not claimed by anyone but the mystic-heads, and the second is devoid of logic.
If god created everything because [fill in pet argument], then something created god because [fill in the same argument].

yeah well i think they're the same thing. One notion is no more mystical than the other. All arose out of the void, that's a very spiritual notion. the difference being that mystics seek to confirm this for themselves experientially.
And I mean it makes sense. If we are the culmination of a process that began with the big bang, and it exploded out of void, then doesn't that infer that void is to be found at the center of our beings? It doesn't take tooo much of a poetic leap to see how that could be true.

It's a scientific notion, too.

There is copious amounts of evidence against the Flying Spaghetti Monster. Of all the gods invented, the FSM has among the most evidence denying its existence. (of course demanding 'proof' is an unrealistic and unreasonable expectation)
please list evidence against FSM. Im extremely offended that you dont believein my god

How exactly do they do that?

You believe this may be true, but you have absolutely no evidence to back it up.

FSM is defined to be made from spaghetti. Spaghetti is defined as a noodle that comes from processed grains. In thousands of years of production, and millions of humans consuming spaghetti it has been observed never to fly and never to be sentient. Hence, this is evidence against the existence of a flying spaghetti monster. Its pretty easy actually, this sort of reasoning is why we dont believe in a flying spaghetti monster (as well as other mythical beings like unicorns and the tooth fairy).
The more traits a mythical being has associated with it, the more evidence there will be to support or deny its existence.

what are you talking about? my FSM is above our world, it does not matter that we eat spaghetti or make it from grain, he has been here since before the beginning of time. The spaghetti we eat is his sacrament, you'd better be careful man, he is listening to you right now

Then it is not made of spaghetti. Spaghetti is defined as being of grains from our world. You cant have it both ways.
If you want to make a claim regarding a spaghetti-like being, then that is an entirely different claim.
