When a cop asked you " Have you ever been in trouble with the police before?" What do I say??

Some times I am stopped by the police, and they ask me,
" Have you ever been in trouble with the police before?"
I am often caught off guard by that question, especially, if I have a friend with me and do not wish him/ her to know I have a past record.
Mind you we are talking petty things, ...like from over 20 years ago, nothing really serious.
I often just say, that I was charged for theft back about 20 years ago with yada, but I have always wondered;
Why do I have to tell them anything? I can't see how if it is a routine stop, I have to tell them my life story. Can't I just say, my past is none of their business?
Does anyone have any advice on how to deal with such a situation?

Might try, "After my last conviction for killing a cop, my lawyer told me to decline answering any questions without her present." Probably won't go over very well... but I bet it is an answer they haven't heard before.

My wife used to waitress at a restaurant some time ago that had cops in there all the time, and it's amazing how many of them are truly shit-eating humans. Now, I'm not saying they all are by any means, and in fact I've met a good amount of them who do what they do because of good intentions and the desire to protect people. The cops that ask questions like the OP said however, are always the ones that did their best to get that job because of some inadequacy in their life and finally gaining a scrap of power somehow gives them a morbid reason to exist.
I've only interacted with a dick cop when being pulled over on my way to class. Admittedly I was speeding because I was late to class. I keep my truck clean and have a book bag in my passenger seat and a bunch of other books strewn on the floor of my passenger seat. This bitch cop asks, "where are you headed?"
It wasn't the question at all that immediately set off a fucking nuclear explosion inside my mind, but her demeanor and her appearance. Caked on makeup to mask a face riddled with scars from a 20 year battle with acne, a haircut like Jim Carey in "Dumb and Dumber," dyed hair that looked my morning piss because she did it herself with a kit from Walmart, and that smug fucking look that this uneducated, pathetic, and probably socially inept person who never fit in anywhere in her entire life (but managed to get a job as a cop to be the token woman on the force) relishes the ability to sit and stare at how fast people drive on a freeway.
Anyways, I'm no fucking psychic, but I knew she was going to write me a ticket anyways. My answer to her was; "It's none of your fucking business." I was doing 7 over. So her question wasn't relevant to me being in an emergency situation. If it were I would have been doing 30-40 over the speed limit.
Always, my vehicle is in perfect condition, my record is completely clean, and my appearance doesn't toss me into any negative stereotype aside from the occasional t-shirt that says "Kill Yourself" or some Dawkins quote etc... being an asshole to a cop may not be a good idea if you have 20 roaches under your seat, have dreadlocks in your hair, hemp jewelry covering your body, and a car freshener shaped like a marijuana leaf.
Fuckin cops...

If I get pulled over I already expect they're going to think I have drugs on me. Grateful Dead bumper stickers.. Dead shirt.. long ass hair.. etc.
That's why I drive with nothing on me

Yep! As much as people like to sweep stereotypes under the rug and act like we don't behave in response to them.... uhhh... we all do.
This is exactly why I look like a normal person. My Glock, ketamine, and meth lab are all under my passenger seat.

If they ask if you have had trouble with the cops before just say:
"Go back to your cruiser, punch in my DL, and find out."

When they ask that question I always lie and say no.
Usually I get away with it, the cop thinks I am a saint and they let me go with no search. Rarely they arrest me anyway and as I am going back to the station they run my info and find out the truth. They just joke about it though, not really a big deal.

I really enjoyed the feedback. I kind of like this answer the best in terms of not really provoking the pig too much. After all, if he comes back with an argument that I have etc, than I just tell him that I did not see it being any of his business in the first place.

If you've been arrested for marijuana/drugs and you're driving your car the cop is gonna see that when they run your plates. Even if you weren't convicted. I caught a glimpse of a cops laptop once and it had my name with "DANGEROUS DRUGS" next to it. I got caught with a gram of weed 3 years ago, sooo dangerous. No conviction either.

The answer you give should include some kind of humor. The reason the cops ask the question is to see your reaction. Asking if you have been in trouble in the past amplifies your nervousness due to association with past unpleasantries. If you can make your answer into a joke, it tells the cop you have nothing to hide. As others have said, they are going to see everything when they go back to their laptop and run your ID. Truth plus humor shows that you are nothing to worry about.
