Because a PC for those who don't have it costs at least $30 which is the price of jars, brf, verm, perlite and the fc + a mister if necessary. same price for ms. also, pc is another hassle for people who need to learn how to use one.

The reason that bulk spawning is not recommended for newbs is that most will fail at proper pasteurization.  Luckily for them, there are a lot of coir bricks to be found that will work just fine if hydrated straight of the bag with room temp water, which is why so many teks don't include pasteurization as a step - they just have you pour boiling water in to hydrate the coir and call it good.  It works most of the time, but not always, and you probably won't have that same luck if you move to dung or other more nutritious bulk substrates, or start supplementing your coir to boost your yields.

There are some coirs out there that will contaminate if not properly pasteurized, so if you suddenly start to get contamination during your spawn runs, this is probably why.

Many new growers, (myself included at one point) start out developing bad habits by skipping steps, even as directed by a tek.  You can succeed for a while, but then your luck will change and you will start to lose grows.  It's just easier for me to learn to do it right so it will work every time, and not have to throw out grows and decontaminate areas because of random mold outbreaks.

If one fails at pf cakes, he should be ashamed to admit it in public.  It's the easiest, fastest, and highest chance of success method yet devised.  Bulk growing is best saved for later when one learns the life cycle of mycelium.  This is why we recommend new growers stick to succeeding or failing in 1/2 pint increments rather than 20 or 30 quart bulk substrate sized projects.

As for moving to grains and bulk substrates while still failing at cakes, it's sort of like buying a toddler a bicycle because he keeps falling on his ass when riding his trike.

My grain, GLCs, and bulk tubs have been soo much better easier than my cakes, I am still trying them it's just that I have lost 2 pint rye jars that were noced with a ms syringe that I had't tried yet and I have lost so many cakes that I have lost count. This last batch only two made it to full colonization, I noced the other 10 HPs last night, we shall see. The best fruit that I have gotten from a brf cake was an invitro pin

I have pasteurized my subs and additives from day one. On my first MMH I used Damion5050's ingredients but I simmered it and the verm for 90 minutes, didn't have a meat thermometer at the time but I kept it on low and the middle was barely steaming at 90 minutes. I didn't wait for the second flush on that one because I had some poo that I wanted to try.

I have one tub with 4 quarts rye, 10 pounds of supposedly pre pasteurized zoo poo for cubes sub that was supposed to be field capacity but it was still a little wet for me so after I pasteurized it so I added baked verm until it was barely field cap like I like it. I use a still air room and oust ten minutes before I spawn and I wipe the whole shebang with 70% rubbing alcohol before spawning, including myself, nothing like alcohol covering your face.:homerdrool: I would have re-pasteurized the headypoo.com poo but a TC on here told me that I shouldn't because it would kill the beneficial micro-organisms if it had already been pasteurized, if I had known that I would have just gotten the manure and not the filterbag sub premade. That is just because I am a meticulous perfectionist with OCD, I was worried they didnt pasteurize it right so I was going to do it again. This is the zoo poo tub after 10 days, sorry bad pic, flashlight next time.

Then the next day I did a coir/verm tub, here it is yesterday, 9 days.

I had some dehydrated Hpoo from mycosupply so I pasteurized it mixed with half a brick if coir Monday, don't know if I killed the good stuff or not because of the length of time it took the middle to hit 140F, I didn't use the PC I used the crock pot because I had tested it and it stayed at 150F. I kept turning it between low and warm until the water reached 160F and tried to keep it at 160, stayed within +-2F. I then took off the weights and the lid every 10-15 minutes at first and then checked it every 30 minutes because the middle was rising so slow. When I checked it and it was 140 I started the timer and kept it above 140F for about 75 minutes, the sub was 150F in the middle when I turned it off.

I did know that long term heat can kill the good and bad stuff and the crock pot is thick ceramic and holds its heat for hours so I had a new bucket that had been washed and wiped with alcohol ready and I carried the bags into the still air room and dumped it into the bucked where I let it cool with the lid on loose. Later when it was cool I ousted took a shower and put on clean clothes. I had run out of gloves so I used food storage bags on my hands and mixed the 4 quarts of rye with it. I will get new pics of all three later I don't have a pic of that tub yet. Next time I will test my stoves temp, I may have messed up by heating it for so long but ProfessorPinhead swears by the slow cookers so I figured I would try it.

I may be a noob this may be my second grow but I think that I did okay and I will do better next time, I could give a flying  :piss: fuck on how easy it is, as long as I get a few ounces off of the first flush I am golden like the  :glittershitz: All I know is those two giant bags of dried mushrooms looked a whole lot prettier in my wood box than my cakes ever did in my holey box full of rocks.

I myself would say if the person knows how to use and owns a good size PC then I would recommend that they go ahead and start bulk and save the wasted money and verm from trying cakes. I may change my mind after this SGFC round, never know with multispore.
