I saw 2 really great movies by the same director (Bela Tarr) in the past 2 weeks

I really like these kinds of slow movies like Andrie Tarkovsky and stuff. These movies are by Bela Tarr and he's know for making slow movies. I like the pace b/c unlike most movies that are about story, this movies attempt to imprint powerful/poetic images in your brain. It uses the slow pace to maximize the effect b/c it forces you to focus on each scene and absorb and contemplate it not just move along with fast editing like Hollywood movies. And the looong shots of just following people around make you feel like you are there, like watching a documentary, other times you really feel like the poor/hopeless characters in the movie as some scenes seem to be purposely monotonous in order to make the audience resonate with the mundane and tedious lives of the poor desolate characters of his movies.

The movies are Hungarian so you gotta read subtitles but i'm used to that. Also they are in Black and White even though they were made in 1994 and 2000. It's a wonderful artistic choice by the director imo to shoot it that way as it gives the movies such a surreal and dreamlike feel somehow and gets across the bleak tone he's trying to get across and adds so much atmosphere.

Just a warning both movies are super slow, they are not entertaining by any means but brilliant and beautiful non of the less.

Over all both are in my favorite movies list. Satantango (1994) is the best, but watch Werckmeister Harmonies (2000) first because you have to watch that one to get used to Bela Tarr's style, because as someone said it's the mount everest of movies with it's 7 and a half hour running time. Seriously though, it's one of the best movies ever made imo. It's astounding that at 450 minutes not one second of the film is a wasted second.

      10/10 for both.
