First grow, running into problems already
    #14354238 - 04/26/11 09:42 AM (12 years, 10 months ago)

Well I'm not actually at the grow stage. I just got to the incubation stage and have hit two major bumps along the way. I'm hoping that the 1st of the 2 bumps has some kind of solution.

1) When I mixed up the BRF and verm, I measured the verm out in my glasses dry, forgetting to take expansion into account so I had some left over mixture. Is there anything I can do with it? It's sitting in a sterile plastic packet at the moment but it's not pasteurised.

2) Other problem was that I only had 5 glasses and while pressure cooking, 3 of them cracked completely - the bottoms dropped off. So now I only have 2 glasses that I inoculated with 1 syringe. Really annoying :mad2:

Edit - looks like you put cold jars into boiling water?

It looks like you used the wrong kinda jars or took them out before letting them cool for almost a day. Find a PF tek and follow it step by step on here. I really dont know what else to say. Keep trying

While pressure cooking the jars, did you elevate them out of the water?
I have used a small dish towel on the bottom of the PC, before I bought a metal collander that fits nicely in the bottom and keeps the water from touching the bottom of the jars.

As for the left over substrate, I would simply keep it until your ready to do some more jars (water may need to be added) or just throw it away, verm and BRF is fairly cheap after all

Good luck and dont give up!

Thanks for the encouragement!

I think the problem was that the glasses were old and probably shitty quality. I put cold water in the PC and heated it up over 25 minutes. The one I heard crack before there was even steam coming out of the top. The jars were also raised up on a metal thing that came with the cooker.

I only gave them 3 hours to cool, but it's really cold here at the moment and the PC was already room temperature when I opened the lid. The glasses were just a little warm to the touch, like luke warm. The tops just lifted right off the bottoms, so I think they had cracked before I opened the cooker. In retrospect, I perhaps should have pre-warmed the glasses in hot water.

I'll probably just chuck the left over substrate then, I have a huge bag of verm  But I'm still wondering if I can find a use for it? Maybe some way of innoculating it?

Also, is 2 PF cakes gonna be enough to trip on?

2 cakes should be more then enough.

The first grow I did had 2 PF cakes which got me 6.7grams dry

I ended up "loosing" 3.2 grams or so of it (chopped it in the coffee grinder without removing vermiculite from base of shroom), but the other 3.5 nailed me for 5 or so hours.

I dunno, its worth thinking that drinking glasses aren't really made for a pressure cooker and canning jars are.....but then again 3 hours is a short time to let it cool man. Go with 12.

Huh?? Can you explain that to me?  You could still do a tea - verm and all - with no problem.

I need to read up about tea, sounds tasty!

The verm and BRF mixture smelled pretty awesome as well, I hope my mushies will be happy

Apparently you can even make tea out of the spent substrate. I think I'm gonna start an outdoor patch with mine. There's a nice forest nearby where I think they'll be happy. Or else maybe on the lawn by the police station :cop:

Is that true? I mean, im the first to admit im a noob and i may not have read it yet, but this is the first time i have read that mycelium contains psilocybin/psilocin of any kind.

It sure does. Which is why you can be arrested with only mycelium growing and no fruits yet. Because if they test the mycelium, it will be positive for psilocybin.

Wasn't seeing any signs of colonisation and had an average temp of about 65F in my room, so I got a cooler box on 30/04 and put the jars in there. On two occasions between then and yesterday, I put in a mug with warm water.

I saw last night that my jars have got their first signs of colonisation! I went to sleep with a smile on my face

Also showing the cooler box where they're living at the moment. I'd imagine at this stage they're hardly using any oxygen so the enclosure is not a problem. Any advice regarding when I should take them out again or if I should fan the box to get new air in?

Yay!
