Book recommendation for un-informed

If you were going to recommend one book to someone whose thoughts on psychedelics are those that build up after years of subjection to DARE programs and sensationalized media coverage in order to convince them that maybe their viewpoint is a bit misinformed, what would it be? I'm not talking about trying to convince someone to go out and smoke DMT tomorrow, but just to open their mind and eyes a little bit to the fact that their beliefs are slightly skewed, and that mushrooms and LSD don't belong in the same category as heroin and meth.
I was thinking maybe One River by Wade Davis, because it's not exclusively about psychoactive drugs, and it shows that people who are very intelligent and quite accomplished in their fields can use entheogens in a beneficial way. Also, it does a good job of showing how indigenous cultures have used hallucinogenic plants for centuries, and that the origins of using the chemicals within them to change states of consciousness didn't originate with a bunch of kids looking to get high in the '60s. But then I was thinking that maybe the point's not central enough in the book to get it across the way I'd like to.
Any other thoughts or recommendations?

It all starts with pot, and The Union is a good movie for that.

...but since you asked for book recommendations, I'd pass them "The Emperor's New Clothes" by Jack Herer. Because it does all start with pot, really. There's some good articles on Cracked.com that are pretty heavily referenced as well.

Intelligent ideas in this post. You believe you've been bamboozled by the traditional media and you probably have. You're also wise enough to know that pro-drug literature can also be just as exaggerated, inflated, and overblown. The truth is probably somewhere in the middle, but be careful. When I first encountered all of the pro-drug literature, it blew the doors off of me. PHd's and elite universities studying psychedelics and extolling their virtues? Keep your bullshit detector on, even when Harvard professors write persuasive books and papers because they might be a little too enamored with drugs themselves. I thought DARE and the rest of them were evil and full of shit, but I have a bit more balance in my opinions today.

Not two weeks ago, there was someone on this board somewhere that was extolling the "spritual virtues of crack-cocaine." I lol'd, but same concept.

From Chocolate to Morphine: Everything You Need to Know About Mind-Altering Drugs [Paperback] Winifred Rosen (Author), Andrew T. Weil M.D. (Author)
http://www.amazon.com/Chocolate-Morphine-Everything-About-Mind-Altering/dp/0618483799/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1303841264&sr=8-1
I think this book will be very helpful as it covers a lot of different drugs in a very intelligent and scientific manner. Like the title states, from chocolate to morphine and everything in between.

Yeah, you're absolutely right. That's why I'd kind of like to decide on a book that's balanced in the look it takes on psychedelics. Perhaps even LSD: My Problem Child by Hofmann would be a good choice for my purposes. He does a good job presenting the admirable qualities of LSD and other substances, while also admitting the dangers involved. Overall, though, I think he leaves you with a positive outlook on LSD and mushrooms and the other things he discusses.
And while you're obviously right in that academics and phds and even mds can be a bit too pro-drug biased in their writings, I definitely think it's better to have positive ideas about pscyhedelics presented to the uninitiated by someone like Wade Davis, Andrew Weil (as someone suggested), or Rick Strassman, who will present the information in an academic or sceintific light, rather than someone like Daniel Pinchbeck, for instance, who's just writing about all the great trips he's had.
But thanks, everyone for the suggestions so far, and...

yeah, thing about crack is that the more you smoke the wider the gap grows between how smart you think you are and how smart you actually are. Look at Charlie Sheen.
The book I recommended has a nice mix of everything. Traditional and native use, suppressed medicinal uses, history, corrupt politics, and our current ego-centric culture and how we come to these "moral" conclusions.
