Is the world running out of water?
    #1435287 - 04/07/03 03:23 AM (20 years, 11 months ago)

Looks like it.

Boy, that's some serious shit. Think the oil wars are bad? Wait for the water wars...

Good thing Canada's got lots. We'll probably just give the States as much as they want, free of charge, just so they'll keep 'protecting' us, or whatever it is Canadians are telling themselves today to avoid the realization that we are nothing more than a USA satalite, performing warehouse operations.

That outta buy us a little more time here, but, the crunch is gonna come unless something changes.

I encourage you to read the linked article.

In the United States, the underground water table has dropped by more than 30 meters (100 feet) in parts of Texas, Oklahoma, and Kansas--three key grain-producing states. As a result, wells have gone dry on thousands of farms in the southern Great Plains.

Time to invest in water pipe companies and desalination plants I guess.

The battle of Armageddon is supposed to be over water. The valley of Megido where the battle takes place is a big watershed and it's preceded by rivers drying up. It's all about the water.

There's water everywhere.
desalinizing seawater takes a lot of energy (oil).

it's all about energy.

fusion.

Yeah, but supplies of fresh water are not everywhere.

But I'm saying that unlimited energy = unlimited fresh water.
desalinizing seawater and pumping it where it's needed.

more reason to find an alternate energy source. Oil can be so... bloody.

I live near the great lakes, which happens to be 1/4 of the worlds fresh water, why would we want yours?

Exactly. Hydrogen cell byproduct = water and oxygen. Imagine huge hydrogen power plants creating lots of water and oxygen and energy.

Imagine oil companies using their vast resources to do the research themselves in order to pattent the technology and position themselves to profit from alternate fuels.

Why would they need to spend their vast resources for anything? Oil is pure profit. It's a liquid pumped out of the ground and sold for billions.

They would actually have to do some REAL work to research alternative energy technologies, not to mention upgrade/replace all the infrastructure in place (gas stations, refineries, power plants etc.)

No they're going to stick with oil until they it dries up in a few decades.

i'm pretty sure that NOT true, in fact i'm almost certain that 99.9% of the worlds fresh water is in the polar ice caps

freezing is natural desalanization. and those ice caps go DEEP.

I'm about 99.9% sure you're wrong but i'll look it up. I know that the great lakes makes up about 1/4 of the world's fresh water. (i'm not certain if they counted the ice caps or not)

Great Lakes makes up 1/5th of the worlds fresh water

I was wrong. Not 1/4th but 1/5th. It's still a lot of water and we have plenty of it.

Just saying they wouldn't have to be left behind in alternate energies. They could be forward looking and position themselvs to reap benifits from it. I'm sure they could work out a deal for tax incentives. Not to mentiom the benifits of the public opinion that would regard them as heros. The one company that came up with the working technology could patent it and reap vast rewards from that patent.

If not they may last untill the oil runs out but thaqt is it. If they are forward looking then there is no end in sight for them.

There are more than a couple decades of oil left though.

While that is true the water in the caps was desalinated when it evaperated from the ocean before it fell to the ground as snow on the caps. All of the worlds natural fresh water is desalinated in this way.

hydrogen fuel cells are not a source of energy. they are a means of packaging energy. making hydrogen to run the cells requires just as much energy (actually more, because nothing it 100% efficient) as actually running the cells. they're just clean, efficient, powerful batteries. energy is not free. there still needs to be a renewable source of large amounts of clean energy before we move away from petroleum.

biomass, wind power, solar energy, geothermal, tidal, hydroelectric... fusion...

these are ways to actually take renewable sources of chemical, thermal, nuclear, or mechanical energy and turn it into electrical energy without toxic byproducts. this energy can then be used to charge hydrogen fuel cells to run cars or power homes and businesses.

oil companies do not fear hydrogen cells because they in no way threaten their livelihood. in fact, currently, the most widespread and economically feasable method of generating hydrogen gas is by using hydrocarbons as raw material (and carbon dioxide and monoxide as waste products), not by electrolysis of water (which yields only oxygen as 'waste').

The great lakes are international. One country can't take freely from his side of the border without affecting the other side.

Not that Canada would mind.

water doesn't go "bad' or is somehow lost. it all returns to nature through the natural filtration process. we will never run out of water.
