agave nectar?  I would google the sugar content and compare it to karo to find out how much you should add to the water to keep a good 4% ratio.

whenever I heat anything up in sealed jars I always keep the lids a little loose to prevent pressure build up...it's pretty unlikely but still a good safety measure.  glass can be expensive...unless you're talking about your pc.

worse thing that can happen with a pc malfunction would be a huge cloud of real hot steam, right?

Just to answer your question about explosions.

Is it likely? No. Just keep an eye on that gauge.

yea agave nectar lol. i thought it was honey but il try it.

wait so try and keep the sugar content at 4% or how should i figure out how much to use.

ok good because i did loosen the lids but i was just really scared to use my PC lmao.

i dont think i got it up to 15 psi but i hope all in all the steam and heat did the job. :/

how long do they take to cool down? anyone know? im goin to let it cool down over night but time wise like what? 4 hours? 6? anyone know?

im so glad it cant explode  :psychsplit:

edit: oh i dont have a gauge though .... i have that thingy on top. is that the gauge? haha idk anything about my PC

In the past few months I had my first experience with LC's. Its fun! LOL! At least I think so when the stuff starts to grow. My first time I used 100 ml of purified water (it was the Gerber Pure brand- gallon size from Wal-mart) with one tablespoon of honey. I sealed the jar with micropore tape (there were 2 inoculation holes in the lid) and then put 2 layers of foil on top of that. I did not have a pressure cooker so I just used a regular saucepan and a lid (make sure your lid fits with the jar inside. I also put some jar rings in the bottom so the bottom of the jar did not come in contact with the bottom of the pan. I then filled the pan with tap water about half way up the side of the jar and then boiled the water with the lid on for about 30 minutes. I let the jar cool down some in the pan with the lid on (maybe an hour or two). Then took it out and set it on the counter until completely cooled. Note: if you do this process in the morning then you can inoculate the jar sometime later in the evening.
When it cooled I squirted the jar with 1 cc of spore solution (well shaken). Then I put it on a shelf in the closet and it didn't take too long to start seeing the mycelium start to grow (less than a week). It took about 3-4 weeks for the mycelium to stop growing (I could just kinda tell). By then I inoculated 13 half pint brf jars. I think I filled the syringe 2 or 3 times and that jar is now in my refrigerator with still alot of mycelium. This stuff really stretches your spores! It's awesome!
After this I did another jar the same way but used maple syrup (1 tablespoon) with the 100 ml of water. That stuff grew very well also. I did put 2 cc's of spores in that jar though and it seemed like the stuff grew faster than the first time around. So I've got alot of lc right now. LOL! I did try using agave nectar my 3rd time around but it did not seem to do very well. There's something growing in there but I'm not sure if it is mycelium. It does not look fluffy like the other 2 jars did. I may throw it out. But the honey and the maple syrup worked great! Good Luck!

the thing on top relieves steam and pressure by being weighted. Once a certain pressure is achieved, the weight is lifted and steam escapes. So your cooker won't explode. But it might also fail to reach 15 psi.

With grains and liquid cultures, it is more important that the PC reach 15 psi and achieve complete sterilization. PF tek is a little more forgiving.

Yeah you should definitely try the honey and the maple syrup. It sounds like alot of people use the karo syrup. I've never tried it. I'm new to this whole thing. I'm sure the karo probably works well. I was just happy that the honey and maple syrup worked as well as they did especially being a newbie. And good luck with the agave nectar. Not sure I would try 3 jars of it after my experience. I'd hate to waste the spores myself. But hey maybe you'll have better luck. You might just have to use more than 1 tablespoon of it. But I'm not sure.

That's true. This is definitely a learning process for me as well. But I'm having fun with it so far.
I know that I'm new to this but after reading alot of the info on this site it does seem to me that some of the sterilization stuff seems a little overboard. I could be completely wrong but it just seems to me that if you use some common sense about being clean and not making obvious contamination moves that you should be okay. I mean I didn't pressure cook my lc and it doesn't even make sense to when you are using purified bottled water already and the lc solution isn't that much when you are talking about 100 ml. That little bit is gonna get hot pretty fast. So I wasn't stressing about it. For me it seemed like 30 minutes of boiling time seemed like plenty of time.

I'm by no means an LC expert. I'm just regurgitating what i've already read. It seems like grain is where the PC is absolutely mandatory. Although the best LC teks all seem to have the same lowet common denominator... So far I'm just a PF tek guy. I'm sure the urge will come along to experiment with LC, but I'm sticking with what works. And I still use a PC for my PF jars. Check pawn shops for these. Its a simple item that works just fine bought secondhand. Its a worthwhile purchase, because it brings along a new degree of confidence that your investment is going to lead to healthy mycelium and not smelly trich.

That's cool. I bought a brand new pressure cooker from Wal-mart for $65.00. It's made by Presto. It's a 16 quart pressure canner and cooker and it says its for smooth top ranges too which I have read that some people have problems with their pressure cookers causing damage to their smooth top ranges. But it looks real nice for the price. I haven't used it yet but plan on it soon with wbs.
