Casing -- no mycelial growth
    #1435246 - 04/07/03 04:39 AM (14 years, 7 months ago)

A FOAF asked me:

"I cased 6 PF cakes of Creeper 4 days ago, and there isn't any mycelial growth in the casing layer. I placed about 1" of perlite in the bottom, then made a 1.5" layer of cut up cakes over the top. After that I added about .75" of casing on top. The casing is composed of peat moss, vermiculite, and a little perlite and pumice. I've kept the top layer moist, but not sopping wet and given them 12 hours of light / 12 hours of dark per day in the open air. I spray them whenever the top layer starts to dry out a bit. I also had these cakes in a terrarium for about 3 weeks, but they refused to fruit for some reason. They got lots of fuzzy, fluffy mycelial growth after I cold shocked them, but never fruited, and now they won't grow in the casing. They aren't dried out or anything, so whats going on? I cased 3 cakes of Hawiian in the same manner tonight, hoping that these ones will make more progress."

cover them and put them in an incubator for a couple days.
then put in a humid terarrium.
let the top layer dry up for a day, or skip a day or two of misting.
i'm not really sure what the problem is....

given them 12 hours of light / 12 hours of dark per day in the open air

no lights needed while casing layer gets colonized.
Also, you won't need to put it in the open air ( higher carbon dioxyde concentrations stimulate myc. growth, so cover it with tin foil etc...)

general rule is a casing layer 1/4 the thickness of the substrate. imho, 3/4 inch layer is too much for 1 1/2" substrate. just another idea.

Theres your prob right their, well not really a problem but you put 3/4 inch of casing it might take a few more days to see mycelium growth, it usally takes anywere from 5-14 days for it to take over the casing layer. It all just depends on the casing and sometimes the strain.

FOAF says:
"I went ahead and put the pans into my terrarium, no light, about 100% humidity, and 85 degrees. I hope to see some growth soon, but I'm just going to leave them alone for a week or so, no fanning.
Everything sound good?"

you wont need the humidity...there is plenty of water in the casing layer...high humidy being added will just bugger things up a little
